Dented flatbed, the patina of hard work: The Nissan Navara will probably be less and less common in this way. At least the manufacturer sees the new edition as a comfort car for everyday use.
M.an doesn’t have to like pick-ups. Too much commercial vehicle, too thirsty for fuel. These are attributes that one can hardly deny the usually massive flatbed truck.
But they have their qualities. They haul as much as a van and dig through the mud like SUVs. But what they lack is interior luxury. Your interiors smell like commercial vehicles.
Jamie Maclean is a product planner at Nissan and is jointly responsible for the development of the new Navara, the name of the pick-up made by the Japanese brand since 1986. For him, “the flatbed” is still the Swiss knife among cars because of its multiple utility.
The developer just sees no obstacle to making the Navara a comfortable car. "But the time of compromise is over," says Maclean.
The Japanese dare to combine their decades of experience in building pick-ups with their know-how as the European market leader in modern crossovers.
First pick-up with LED signature
The result, however, is a Navara that looks like an oversized Qashqai in which the trunk lid has been forgotten. The desire for more prestige can be seen in the fine ambience and the lavish chrome decorations in the grill, also in the keyless entry system and a round-view monitor that shows the five-meter car from a bird’s eye view as it is being maneuvered.
In addition, the Navara is the first pick-up with an LED signature, and the Japanese have even adopted the electronic emergency brake from their off-road vehicles.

Nissan intends to expand the commercial vehicle segment even further in the future. So far, the pick-up Navara, the NT500 truck, the station wagon versions of the NV200 and NV400 …as well as the van Evalia.

Nissan now also offers a taxi version of the latter. The seven-seater e-NV200 Evalia is a purely electrically powered van that is used for taxi operations …required electrical system is equipped.
When it comes to the driver, too, the Navara has a decidedly cultivated pace compared to its predecessor. Maclean’s team has given him a new rear axle with multi-link suspension and coil springs, which puts an end to the previous hopping course.
Even when empty, the Navara irones cleanly over bumps. And because the car is so well insulated from noise, you could easily forget that you are sitting in a pick-up.
Twin turbo diesel
Nissan is also celebrating a premiere under the massive hood, where it is assembling a 2.3-liter diesel, which is also available as a twin turbo – there was nothing like that with the pick-ups. Offered with 160 or 190 hp, the engine needs up to 24 percent less than its predecessor and, in the best case, manages with 7.0 liters.
And you don’t feel underpowered in the Navara. At least not as long as the bed is empty and not loaded with the maximum load of one ton. 450 Newton meters (Nm) develop a pretty impressive effect and balance the thick ship from zero to 100 km / h in a good ten seconds. And if you just stay on the gas long enough, you can do up to 184 things – here too the Navara is closer to the lifestyle SUV than to the truck.

For better adaptation, the high-performance version of the pick-up has different driving modes. Including the programs normal, road, all weather and also mud and… Sand mode. LED headlights, a camera system for better all-round visibility and a high-quality interior provide comfort.
When it comes to the work performance of the pick-up, however, uncompromising is the order of the day. Still built on an almost indestructible ladder frame, the flatbed truck still tows around a ton and, depending on the structure with a single or double cabin, can now even take up to 3.5 tons on the hook. And if the terrain gets a little more difficult, there is of course another switchable all-wheel drive.
For Maclean, the Navara marks the next step in the ennoblement of the pick-up as an everyday car. The fact that his sister company Renault wants to sell him with its own emblem from 2017 could serve as confirmation.
Mercedes is also interested in the platform and is building its first own flatbed truck on it at the end of the decade. But it is expected to be far more expensive than the 26,795 euros base price at which Nissan will be selling the Navara in January.
