Low consumption can be quite expensive – Audi and BMW show this with their hybrid models. Japanese manufacturers show how the technology can be produced more cheaply.

W.he hears hybrid and thinks about saving, gets his first shock when looking at the price list. For example, an Audi A6 with basic equipment costs 53,300 euros. A V6 diesel with four-wheel drive would also be available for the same price. BMW also demands a lot for a hybrid: At 62,900 euros, the Active Hybrid 5 is exactly 9800 euros more expensive than a 535i.

Both are powered by the same in-line six-cylinder. Even if one subtracts an equipment advantage – among other things, the BMW comes with a navigation system as standard – there is still an extra price that can hardly be compensated for with lower fuel consumption. In addition, the technology is also spreading in the trunk. In the BMW, only a measly 375 liters are left for luggage. The A6 lacks adaptive cruise control and a Quattro drive.

Environment Ministry urges more economical cars

In the meantime, politicians have once again called on manufacturers to produce more fuel-efficient cars. Since the EU Commission is apparently planning to lower the bio share in fuels planned for 2020, car manufacturers will have to comply with a stricter CO 2 limit for their new vehicle fleets in the future, said the President of the Federal Environment Agency, Jochen Flasbarth. He recalled that instead of the 120 grams of CO 2 per kilometer originally required by the EU for 2015, the car industry was only given 130 grams; the rest should be brought in via biofuel, among other things. "This" estate "is to be questioned," said the UBA boss.

Japanese manufacturers pioneers

Flasbarth called for cars to be designed for lower maximum speeds in the future. They would then automatically become less difficult and therefore more economical. "A general speed limit on motorways would have a great positive impact through this effect," he said.

Hybrid technology does not have to be expensive, as the Japanese manufacturers show. The pioneers in this field bring models to market for less than 30,000 euros.
