The first model of the bZ sub-brand is due to launch in mid-2022 – possibly with a Tesla control horn
On Monday night, Toyota has the recently teased electric SUV revealed. As expected, it’s named bZ4X, but since it is still a design study, "Concept" is added.
As is known, the vehicle was developed in collaboration with Subaru. Therefore, Subaru will probably also present a study soon. The car is based on Toyota’s new e-TNGA platform, which was developed exclusively for electric cars.
“The Toyota bZ4X SUV Concept developed in collaboration with Subaru is based on the new e-TNGA electric car platform. The study conveys Toyota’s legendary quality, durability and long-term reliability (QDR), in combination with Subaru’s AWD capabilities, to provide a driving experience achieve that is both comfortable and fascinating. "
The design is extremely angular, as the 2019 renderings showed:

The grill is closed, plus there are slit-like headlights and a hexagonal air inlet at the bottom. The angular wheel cutouts, which are emphasized in glossy black, are noticeable on the side. The black area on the front fender extends around the corner to the front – we have never seen this on any production car. The front and rear windows are very flat, which should be good for the aerodynamics.

Inside there is a rather strange looking structure behind the steering wheel that draws the eye to the (rather small) instrument display. There is also a touchscreen in landscape format and a very high center console between the two front occupants.
The picture above, which was sent with the advance notice, shows a normal steering wheel. In the pictures for the final press release, however, you can see a control horn like the Tesla Model S Facelift. Possibly both versions should be offered, or Toyota wants to test the reactions first:
The driving modes P, R, N and D are apparently activated via a rotary knob in the center console. The pictures do not show steering wheel paddles for changing the recuperation strength. The interior space should be similar to that of "a large D-segment sedan", roughly the same as in the upper middle class.
According to Toyota, the bZ4X is the first of seven bZ series models to hit the market by 2025. They should have the model names bZ1, bZ2, bZ2X, bZ3, bZ4, and bZ5. Overall, Toyota wants to offer no fewer than 15 electric cars in 2025 – a huge increase, because so far there has only been one electrically powered C-HR in China.
As for the tech, not much has been disclosed. "Electric motors on the front and rear axles enable an all-wheel drive system that benefits from Subaru’s many years of expertise in this area and from Toyota’s specialist knowledge," said Toyota. This suggests that the car will only be available with all-wheel drive. In addition, the bZ4X should get a "solar charging system" that increases the range using solar power – so probably a solar roof, as optionally the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has.
The Toyota bZ4X is only produced in Asia, namely in its home country Japan and China. Sales are slated to begin worldwide in mid-2022.
