Now there are new pictures of the electric SUV (update)
Longing. For a long time, Toyota has been reluctant to make electric cars. But now things are moving forward, and quickly: The bZ4X was launched as a study in April presented, now the series version follows. Most of the technical details were revealed on October 29th, only the dimensions were missing.
Now Toyota USA also published the dimensions of the US version and interesting pictures. We have therefore updated this article:
- US dimensions: 4,689 mm length / 1,859 mm width / 1,648 mm height / 2,850 mm wheelbase

The SUV is Toyota's first electric car on a dedicated electric platform called e-TNGA, which Subaru will also use – likely for the Solterra. Toyota has announced two motorizations for the bZ4X, both of which will receive a 71 kWh battery and also offer practically the same system performance. The difference is mainly in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive:
Power / torque | 0-100 km / h / Vmax | Battery / range | |
bZ4X FWD | 150 kW / 265 Nm | 8.4 seconds / 160 km / h | 71 kWh / approx. 450 km |
bZ4X AWD | 2 * 80 = 160 kW / 336 Nm | 7.7 seconds / 160 km / h | 71 kWh / approx. 450 km |
The AWD model has two 80 kW motors that drive the front and rear axles. There are driving modes for Snow / Mud, Deep Snow / Mud (below 20 km / h) and Grip Control for tough off-road use below 10 km / h.
The lithium-ion battery stores 71 kWh and, depending on the version, should provide a WLTP range of over 450 kilometers. The range can be increased with the optional solar roof. Over the course of a year, it should provide enough energy for 1,800 kilometers. According to Toyota, the system enables one-pedal driving. Toyota has not yet revealed how to activate this. The battery should still provide 90 percent of its original performance after ten years (or 240,000 kilometers, whichever comes first).
The thermal management system includes water cooling for the battery and a heat pump, which does not allow the range to drop to the bottom even when the temperature is below zero. At a 150 kW charging station, the battery is charged to 80 percent in around 30 minutes via CCS2. An 11 kW on-board charger should be available from the 4th quarter of 2022; Toyota does not say how high the charging power will be from the start.
The bZ4X is the first production Toyota to offer a steer-by-wire system ("One Motion Grip"). This is to be introduced in Europe at a later date. According to the manufacturer, it leads to more legroom and less vibration on the steering wheel; it also enables the steering wheel characteristic curve to be adapted to the driving mode.
Toyota calls the new, angular front a "hammerhead" design. On the side, the very angular wheel cutouts are noticeable, which appear larger than they are due to the black decorative elements. The wheel sizes range up to 20 inches. On the rear axle, the hips are emphasized by flared wheel arches, the sill is emphasized by the shape and visually highlighted by a black section.
There is a continuous light bar at the stern; the look is extremely angular here too. The aerodynamics are improved here by a split roof spoiler and the edge at the level of the light bar as well as a diffuser. There are air vents at the front that direct the air around the front wheels. In addition, the sub-floor is smoothed.
In terms of dimensions, the newcomer is 85 mm lower than the RAV4, has shorter overhangs and a 160 mm longer wheelbase. Toyota is proud of the small turning circle diameter of 11.4 meters. The trunk has a capacity of 452 liters; Toyota does not yet reveal the volume with the rear seats folded down.
Inside there is a large touchscreen in landscape format and a small instrument display (7 inches). As in the study, the area between the steering wheel and the driver's display is very idiosyncratic designed as a shell. And there seem to be two different steering wheels, a conventional one and a control horn.
The European premiere of the bZ4X is to take place on December 2nd. The online reservation should start shortly afterwards. There is still no information about the prices.
The bZ4X is the first model of the new sub-brand bZ ("beyond Zero"). The series should include no fewer than seven series, all of which should be on the market by 2025. The naming is still speculative; It is conjectured over bZ1, bZ2, bZ2X, bZ3, bZ4, and bZ5.
