Toyota Mirai breaks world record: 1,000 kilometers with hydrogen-record

Toyota announced today that its flagship hydrogen fuel cell car, the Toyota Mirai the second generation, which has increased the world record range to over 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel.

According to the Japanese manufacturer, the car (driven by a total of four drivers) could cover a total of 1,003 kilometers and at the end had a remaining range of nine kilometers on the on-board information system. The hydrogen consumption was on average 0.55 kg / 100 km (the full tank holds 5.6 kg).

That is a significantly higher result than the previous record, that of the Hyundai Nexo was set up and was 778 kilometers.

"The new generation of sedans covered 1,003 kilometers on electric fuel on one hydrogen tank – and thus demonstrated the long-distance potential of drive technology."

"The record run was completed on May 26th on public roads in the south of Paris and in the Loir-et-Cher and Indre-et-Loire regions. The distance covered and the average consumption of 0.55 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 kilometers were achieved by certified by an independent authority. "

"The drivers attempted the record with a fuel-efficient driving style; however, no special techniques were used that could not also be used in everyday life."

The result is impressive indeed, especially as the car was ready for further journeys after just five minutes of refueling.

Our main question is therefore whether this will change anything for battery electric cars, which politicians have so far believed to be the ultimate zero-emissions solution.

Not necessarily, because the ranges and charging speeds of electric cars are also increasing steadily. This is how an Audi e-tron GT recently covered a distance of 1,000 kilometers within ten hours (but with charging stops).

In addition, hydrogen vehicles still have the problem that the network at filling stations is still very thin. Okay, this could be changed, but the efficiency of a fuel cell remains a little less than that of an electric car.

Incidentally, the Toyota Mirai starts at 63,900 euros. A tank of fuel currently costs around 50 euros.
