Toyota is the first large-scale manufacturer to sell a car with a fuel cell. As in the past, German manufacturers are lagging behind with hybrid technology. But they are not idle.

M.irai is the Japanese word for future. And when a car manufacturer names a new model like that, it says a lot about the chances they are calculating for the car: great ones.

With the Mirai, this prognosis clearly relates to the technology behind its drive. The very spacey styled car is the world’s first production car with a fuel cell that actually comes onto the market. There have already been attempts by others – from Daimler, BMW, General Motors, Honda and, most recently, Hyundai, the Koreans operate a leasing fleet of the ix35 FCEV.

When driving with a fuel cell, a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen is used to generate electricity for an electric motor. Toxic or climate-damaging exhaust gases are a thing of the past, because nothing comes out of the exhaust but water vapor. And while e-cars usually have to be charged for hours after driving around 150 kilometers until the battery is completely refreshed, the hydrogen tanks of the Mirai last 500 kilometers and are full again after five minutes.

Scarce space in the space glider

With a length of 4.90 meters and a streamlined profile, with huge air inlets at the front and a powerful rear end, the Toyota is a bit reminiscent of a spaceship. Once you get into the Mirai, you are back in the present. Even if the screens are a bit bigger and more colorful, the Mirai doesn’t feel much different than a Prius.

Unfortunately, this also applies to the space available. Because the electric motor and all the electronics are already under the hood at the front, the fuel cell (under the driver’s seat), the two hydrogen tanks (in front of and behind the rear axle) and the buffer battery from the Prius (under the 450-liter trunk) yes somewhere. It is not surprising that there is a lack of knee and headroom.

The Mirai is louder than a Prius because there is always a fan or compressor running somewhere next to the electric motor. And it is more sedate, which is due to its weight: It weighs 1.9 tons. But when you move the gear stick to D, step on the pedal and purr away, the fuel cell appears to be the most normal thing in the world. And at least if you don’t switch to Eco mode, the performance is suitable for everyday use: 0 to 100 in 9.6 seconds and a maximum of 178 km / h.

Because Toyota has to come up with quantities quickly in order to meet its zero-emission quota, those responsible not only rely on the futuristic shape and the fascination with the technology. In America, the Mirai is available at a bargain price: after deducting the subsidies, it costs the equivalent of only 36,000 euros.

Expensive fun without subsidies

In Europe, however, the bearer of hope is likely to find it difficult. Not only because there are currently only a dozen or so hydrogen filling stations in Germany and a network plan with initially only 50 stations for the future. But also because the Japanese are not making a subsidized price here without political pressure and are charging 78,540 euros for their Mirai – twice as much as BMW for the i3 and even more than Tesla for the Model S..

The workplace of the Quant e-sports sedan looks just as futuristic as the functionality of the flow cell drive sounds. Nanoflowcell promises absolutely clean and environmentally friendly technology: No harmful exhaust gases flow out of the Quant’s exhaust, only harmless granules or Vapors – depending on whether the fuel is pulverized or vaporized after the reaction in the flow cell. Both technological variants are conceivable.

What can still be read from the fuel cell: After the hybrid Prius, which came onto the market in Japan in 1997, Toyota is once again documenting its pioneering position in alternative drives, at least compared to German industry, which will only bring series vehicles onto the road in a few years.

After all, VW and Audi are currently showing fresh prototypes at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The VW brand has balanced the fuel cell on board a new Golf for the first time; Audi combines the technology with its brand-typical all-wheel drive.

Wait? Typical for Volkswagen

VW had already installed the fuel cell in several generations of vehicles on a trial basis. In the Golf Variant Hymotion study, it has now been combined for the first time with the new modular technology on which almost all of the Wolfsburg-based models will be based in the future.

Audi is turning the technology screw a little further and combining the fuel cell in the A7 Sportback H-Tron Quattro with all-wheel drive and plug-in hybrid technology. In addition to the hydrogen cell, a lithium-ion battery that can be recharged at the socket is used.

With the concept vehicle, one thing should be shown above all: We could, if we wanted. A wait-and-see attitude is typical for Volkswagen. Even with hybrid technology, the requirement was not exactly hurry, until a major offensive with fully developed plug-in hybrids was finally launched in the group.

A series production of the fuel cell will only take place when the market and infrastructure justify it, says Audi Chief Technology Officer Ulrich Hackenberg. The same applies to the sister brand. The big problem: So far there has not been a nearly sufficiently dense network of filling stations with hydrogen pumps.
