The Japanese are increasingly relying on electric drives
Citroen has the e-Spacetourer and e-Jumpy, Peugeot the e-Traveler and e-Expert, Opel the Zafira-e. Only the fourth brand that builds the van has not yet had an electric version. That is now changing: Toyota brings the Proace Electric and Proace Verso Electric.
While the Proace Electric can carry up to 1.2 tons of payload, the combination version Proace Verso Electric offers seats for up to nine people.
A 100 kW electric motor drives the front wheels. In power mode, the full 100 kW are available, the top speed is limited to 130 km / h. In normal mode, the power is reduced to 80 kW and in eco mode to 60 kW.
Two batteries with 50 and 75 kWh are offered, the ranges are 230 and 330 kilometers respectively. The smaller battery consists of 18 modules that together weigh 383 kilograms. The larger battery consists of 27 modules with a total weight of 534 kilos. Toyota grants an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer guarantee on the traction battery, based on 70 percent of the charging capacity.

All models have a single-phase on-board charger with 7.4 kW, there is an optional three-phase on-board charger with 11 kW. Toyota does not specify the maximum charging power with direct current, but the smaller battery on the 100 kW column should be able to be charged to 80 percent in 32 minutes, the larger in 48 minutes. The CCS charging port is located in the left front fender.
The commercial vehicle version Proace Electric is available in the lengths L1 (4.60 meters, 5.3 m3 loading volume) and L2 (5.31 meters, 6.1 m3). There is a smart cargo system for both variants, which increases the capacity of the cargo hold a little. The sliding doors allow euro pallets to be loaded from the side. The standard payload is one ton, the smaller battery can be increased to 1.275 tons. The trailer load for braked trailers is also one ton, provided that no more than 50 percent of the payload is used in the hold.
The Proace Verso Electric people carrier is also available in lengths L1 and L2, the versions are called Shuttle, Shuttle Comfort, Team Germany and Executive. The loading volume is 603 liters (L1) or 989 liters (L2); these values refer to the eight-seat "Team Germany" model.
Prices start at 41,948 euros for the Proace Electric and 58,530 euros for the Proace Verso Electric.

The Proace Electric will soon be followed by electric versions of the smaller Proace City and Proace City Verso, according to Toyota. Both get a 50 kWh battery and a 100 kW drive. The car is scheduled to start in October 2021. Toyota plans to publish more information shortly.
The fact that Toyota is the last brand to introduce electric drives fits in with the company's previous strategy, which has focused on hybrid vehicles and fuel cell cars like the Mirai. Recently, however, Toyota has also turned to electric drives. After a C-HR with electric drive for China, the brand is planning seven new electric vehicles on its e-TNGA platform; the first called Toyota bZ4X was recently unveiled and should be on the market in mid-2022.
