We expect a mid-range SUV a la RAV4 based on e-TNGA
Toyota shows a first teaser picture of its planned electric SUV. You can see part of the front. The car will be presented as a whole at a presentation on April 19, i.e. next Monday.
The car is shown at 2:30 am European time. The time is obviously coordinated with Japan and the USA, because then it is 9:30 am in Japan and 5:30 pm on the west coast of the USA (Pacific Standard Time) or 8:30 pm on the east coast (Eastern Time). That shows the priorities: Japan and the USA are more important than Europe as markets for the newcomer.
We have lightened the original, which means that a little more of the front can be seen. The car is then given an angular front with a strongly contoured apron and a contoured front hood. There seems to be a possibly hexagonal air intake at the bottom. In the middle of the hood is the blue Toyota logo, which is also emblazoned on the hybrid models.
Toyota has not yet disclosed any information about the newcomer. It is likely to be the medium-sized SUV the size of a RAV4 based on the new e-TGNA platform, which Toyota has already confirmed. The vehicle is expected to be sold in Europe but will be built in Japan at a facility specializing in electric cars. Therefore, the model is likely to be introduced on the home market as well.
The e-TGNA platform supports front, rear and all-wheel drive, multiple battery sizes and electric motor powers. Apparently, three different battery sizes are provided, as the graphic below shows.
A whole series of electric cars is to be built on the basis of e-TGNA:
The now shown front fits the two SUVs that are in the front left in the rendering. Our assumption: The car at the very front corresponds to model A (and thus the model that will be presented on April 19), the one behind it corresponds to model B, an even larger SUV.
In general, the cars will look significantly different from the brand's current vehicles: They will have a futuristic, angular look. The headlights don't look anything o tiny on the new teaser picture like they do on the rendering. Possibly the new vehicles will start under the sub-brand BZ (Beyond Zero), which Toyota recently registered with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
There is already a Toyota BZ forum, its administrator apparently assumes that the models shown above will bear the designations BZ1 and BZ1X to BZ5 and BZ5X, whereby he cites further trademark registrations.
The new mid-size SUV is being developed together with Subaru. Subaru will then also bring a corresponding SUV, which will be called Evoltis. The styling is said to be similar to the unnamed electric car study from 2020. This shows similar angular shapes as the rendering of the Toyota models:
