Other e-TNGA models are to be called BZ1, BZ2, BZ2X, BZ3, BZ4, BZ4X and BZ5
Toyota recently showed a teaser picture of its planned electric SUVs, which is to be based on the e-TNGA platform. The picture from the front was not particularly informative, but it did match the silhouette that Toyota has already shown and the official renderings of the e-TNGA-based models.
Now the French magazine L'Argus announces what the newcomer is supposed to be called.
We already suspected that the new Toyota sub-brand BZ (for Beyond Zero) would be part of the name. In addition, the administrator of a special forum, citing trademark registrations, claimed that the e-TNGA models would be BZ1 and BZ1X to BZ5 and BZ5X (see the article linked above). L'Argus now claims that Toyota only registered the names BZ1, BZ2, BZ2X, BZ3, BZ4, BZ4X and BZ5, i.e. seven names.
X is a common short form for crossover, so it should refer to the body shape. The numbers will probably denote the size of the vehicle. Since Toyota only announced six models, one model name too many was registered. The two SUV names also do not quite match the rendering published in 2019:
The car at the front left is obviously an SUV. In other patent drawings the car could also be seen from the side. Compared to the silhouette shown by Toyota, there is a clear correspondence:
Due to the rather generous size (probably compact or mid-range) we assume that the car is called BZ4X. This is also because we can only imagine a larger SUV (i.e. a BZ5X). Because if the first Toyota newcomer is the size of a RAV4, he would have to compete in the middle class. There is also upper middle class and upper class. We consider it unlikely that Toyota will want to occupy both classes.
If it weren't for L'Argus' list, we would have classified the big car next to the BZ4X (number 2 from left) also as an SUV and labeled it the BZ5X. A 2019 list also mentioned a medium SUV and a large SUV. But if the only other crossover model is called the BZ2X, it would have to be significantly smaller. Colleague Ruffo from InsideEVs USA thinks it's number four from the left – apparently because it has the thickest black body planks on the wheel arches.
We are not completely convinced of this assignment. We were wrong recently when we gave the teaser picture of the new Aygo to the new electric SUV assigned. So we became cautious. We are only relatively safe with the BZ4X. If we're wrong, we'll have to apologize again on April 19th – then the car will be revealed.
