The electric SUV will only make its debut at the Shanghai Motor Show in April
For us, journalistic decency also includes admitting mistakes. So we mistook the car that Toyota teased a few days ago with the picture above, for an electric SUV. We were wrong about that.
It was a study of a new Aygo, as was clear from today's presentation. The shapes are very surprising, because the microcar mutates into a small SUV. You can read more about the car at Motor1, here we only show one picture:
So Toyota didn't tease its first real electric car. We now also know when the electric SUV will be presented: At the Shanghai Motor Show in April, as Toyota recently announced. In addition, the brand published this symbolic image, which is not very telling:
Toyota is a pioneer in powertrain electrification, but has so far focused on hybrid drives and hydrogen cars like the Mirai. When it comes to purely electric drives, the Japanese company fell behind the competition. That will change with the new electric SUV.
The medium-sized SUV, the size of a RAV4, is based on the new e-TGNA platform. The vehicle is expected to be sold in Europe but will be built in Japan at a facility specializing in electric cars. Therefore, the model is likely to be introduced on the home market as well.

The e-TGNA platform supports front, rear and all-wheel drive, multiple battery sizes and electric motor powers. Based on e-TGNA, a whole series of electric cars is to be created, which can be seen in the rendering above, including SUVs, sedans and also two vans.
Toyota's rendering shows that the new models will look very different from the brand's current range of products. The cars have a futuristic, angular look, but also have some slight curves so that they don't look too chunky. The headlights are just as tiny as on the teaser picture of the X Prologue.
The new mid-size SUV is being developed together with Subaru. Subaru will then also bring a corresponding SUV, which will be called Evoltis. The styling is said to be similar to the unnamed electric car study from 2020. This shows similar angular shapes as the Toyota models:
