Toyota Yaris Hybrid awarded the “Green Steering Wheel”
It was not without reason that the Toyota Yaris Hybrid was awarded the “Green Steering Wheel” in early November 2012. In the poll organized by “Bild am Sonntag” and “Auto Bild”, a jury of experts voted the small full hybrid the most environmentally friendly vehicle of the year. As early as 2009, the “big brother” Toyota Prius had secured the coveted award for innovations in the field of environmental compatibility and sustainability.

As the new flagship model of the series, the Yaris Hybrid impresses with its exclusive, aerodynamically optimized exterior design. The front end features the modern Toyota face with trapezoidal air intake and newly designed headlights.
The instruments in the Yaris Hybrid are easy to read, the controls are easy to reach and recognizable. Already part of the basic equipment u.a. a two-zone automatic climate control, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, electric windows and a height and fore/aft adjustable steering wheel. (see equipment variants/prices)
The space available in the 3.90 meters long and 1.69 meters wide Yaris is generous despite its small car dimensions. Access to the rear seats is conveniently via their own doors. The battery of the hybrid drive is not visible; for the first time it was accommodated under the rear seats to save space. The trunk volume is 286 liters, as in the petrol model.
Drive and performance of the Yaris Hybrid from Toyota
The hybrid drive consists of a 1.5-liter VVT-i petrol engine, an electric motor and a continuously variable automatic transmission and develops a system output of 74 kW/100 hp. Thanks to the intelligent packaging and the hybrid components, which are even lighter and more compact than the Toyota Auris Hybrid, the Yaris Hybrid has no restrictions whatsoever in terms of space, trunk volume and suitability for everyday use compared to the conventionally powered Yaris.
The special thing about the hybrid synergy drive in the Toyota Yaris is that the petrol engine and electric motor can work both separately and together. Up to a speed of approx. 50 km/h and a distance of up to 1.5 km can be driven purely electrically. The Yaris Hybrid needs 11.8 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h. The maximum achievable speed is 165 km/h.
The nickel-metal hydride battery does not require external charging. When braking gently or when coasting, the kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy and fed to the battery.
