Commuters are back in traffic jams – 79 hours a year in a city

In 2020, Corona had let the traffic collapse. Commuters saved a lot of time on their way to work. But this year the breather is already over, as an analysis shows.

The Corona breakdown for commuters is over. Anyone who drives to work by car loses significantly more time in the traffic jam.

An analysis by the traffic data provider Inrix in the examined German cities resulted in a 40-hour loss of time for typical car commuters in 2021. That is 14 hours more than 2020, as the company announced on Tuesday. Corona slowed down the commuter flows last year, now the traffic has increased again and the loss of time is almost as high as before the pandemic. In 2019 there were an average of 46 hours.

By far the worst will hit the car driving commuters in Munich: On average 79 hours, they lost up to the year by traffic jams on the way to work – more than three days. However, that’s still seven hours less than before Corona. In second place, Berlin follows with 65 hours. Here is only an hour for the pre -crisis backlog.

From the third place took third place from Hamburg, the distances will then be significantly lower. Potsdam (46 hours), Pforzheim (44), Dusseldorf (43), Cologne (42) as well as Nuremberg, Dresden and Munster with 41 hours each time in the stands.

Some cities also have massive climbs at the pre-corona period. In Potsdam and Dresden, it is almost a third – according to Inrix, the plus in both cities is probably due to larger construction sites.

In an international comparison, however, German drivers get it quite lightly: Inrix calculated a time loss of 148 hours for the Staukadt London – more than six days. This is followed by Paris with 140 and Brussels with 134 hours. According to the study in particular, the traffic jams have tightened again. In contrast, traffic in the United States has remained significantly more fluid compared to 2019.

Pop-up cycle paths as new traffic jam makers?

Inrix sells transport analyzes and services for networked cars to administrations and companies. The greater the congestion problems appear, the better his business prospects. The company is not the only one published by studies on the subject. The ADAC recently found a massive increase in traffic jams in its summer traffic jam for traffic on motorways. An annual balance of the traffic club for 2021 is not yet available – as well as the card specialist TomTom, who has released more frequent ranking in the past.

The reasons for congestion development can only be assumed – apart from the current Corona measures of different traffic volumes -. It remains open to what influence the 3G rule in buses and trains will have on the sewage frequency and whether more people switch to the car-either because they reject the 3G rule or because they are generally afraid of a high risk of infection on bus and train. It is still unclear how the pop-up cycle paths introduced in cities such as Munich and Berlin influence the traffic jam. For example, you have been seen in Munich for a few months, where numerous lanes in favor of bike and bus traces have been eliminated, long traffic jams in streets where there were no before.

Criticism of traffic jam rankings from science

Traffic experts see such traffic jam rankings with mixed feelings: Justin Geistefeldt, professor of transport at the Ruhr University Bochum, is fundamentally "a bit problematic" because they did not take sufficient account of special features of the individual cities. "The topography, the transport network structure and, above all, the commuters of the cities under consideration are only partially comparable," he says. Nevertheless, the studies provided certain information. «There is hardly a better data basis for evaluating the traffic jam.»
