So far, Mercedes has not been successful in the van market. The Vaneo was too expensive and was discontinued. Now it’s supposed to "City Titan" judge.

D.he frozen pizza does not fit through the data line and the package from Ebay does not come by email. That is why the whole world assumes that the flow of goods in cities will continue to swell – and with it the fleet of small vans for trade, craft and industry.

Rising number of registrations

The experts estimate that the number of worldwide registrations will increase from just under one million in 2009 to 1.3 million by 2015, and they expect a market share of around 50 percent for Europe:

Every second van will then no longer be a VW bus or a Mercedes Sprinter, but a Citroen Berlingo or a Renault Kangoo.

This is a business that the commercial division of Mercedes no longer wants to pass by.

Vaneo too impractical

The Swabians have already suffered shipwreck in this segment because the Vaneo based on the A-Class offered at the turn of the millennium was too expensive and too impractical for most traders.

That is why it was discontinued in 2005 after only four years and less than 60,000 copies.

But now they are making a new attempt and getting the Citan into position.

Space giant celebrates its premiere in autumn

The small space giant for urban traffic, which takes its name from “City” and “Titan”, will celebrate its public premiere in autumn at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show in Hanover and will be available in stores this year.

Three body variants are planned as a station wagon for families and other passenger transport trips, as a fully sheet metal box and as a Mixto with a bit of both. In addition, there will be three different wheelbases and two payload classes, announced Van boss Volker Mornhinweg at a preview in Stuttgart.

Also with electric drive

Under the high bonnet, primarily diesel and a gasoline engine are said to be stuck, which cover a performance range of around 70 to 110 hp. A version with an electric drive would also be conceivable.

To make it work better this time with the small box for the big cities, Mercedes has brought an experienced partner on board: The Citan is the first result of the cooperation with Renault and Nissan and is therefore based on the next generation of the Kangoo. "However, we only take over the platform, the engines and the transmission," says Mornhinweg, trying to ensure the independence of the Mercedes.

It always remains a Mercedes

Instead of just swapping the diamond and the star, the Citan will have its own design, a completely new dashboard and a different setup for steering and chassis, promises the head of the van division: “It looks like a Mercedes, it feels like one Mercedes and he drives like that too. "

The Mercedes claim will probably also apply to another category: the price. The Swabians have not yet revealed how much the Citan will cost.

But the hopes for a bargain with a star have already been negated by Head of Sales Andreas Burkhart: "We certainly don’t have the right offer for fleets that have to watch out for the last cent."
