The low weight of only 1111 kilograms is the result of numerous individual measures. Parts of the body are made of carbon, magnesium or aluminum, the shells of the SportsiSeats are made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic, the brake discs are made of ceramic. In addition, instead of a heavy starter battery made of lead, a lighter version with lithium-ion technology is on board.

Reifnitz am Worthersee is a tranquil health resort. But once a year it gets really loud there. And then when around 200,000 car fans meet to celebrate their great boxes.

D.his meeting is a feast for every TuV inspector, and the radar guns are probably on constant fire. Because at the weekend the assembled PS proletariat from all over Europe comes together in Reifnitz am Worthersee and celebrates the legendary GTI meeting. Where more than 200,000 fans pay homage to the sporty compact cars, the air smells of gasoline or burnt rubber and proud golf drivers present their perky cars with the matching blondes, the VW Group should of course not be missing.

Because the Lower Saxony know about the loyalty of this customer group, nobody on the executive board turns up their noses at the perfume made from beer, petrol and sunscreen that is wafting everywhere. The crowning glory comes once more than Wolfsburg itself.

Because in order to celebrate the premiere of the new Golf GTI once again at Lake Worthersee, the Lower Saxony group has set up a study of the compact that puts everything that has come before it in the shade: The Kraftmeier, called "Design Vision GTI", has 503 hp , what it takes to be the most powerful GTI of all time.

Where a two-liter four-cylinder works in the series, a V6 with a three-liter displacement is used here. Ventilated by two turbos, it mobilizes up to 560 Newton meters, which tear on the asphalt via a dual clutch gearbox, four-wheel drive and the 275 rubbers on the 20-inch rims so that the chunks of tar will only fly. But the V6 catapults the over GTI in 3.9 seconds to 100 km / h and for the first time in the history of the model achieves 300 km / h.

Show cars as eye-catchers

But the powerful engine is only half the battle. The other half pays for the razor-sharp design with clearly protruding C-pillars and a body that is shorter than the original, but is six centimeters flatter and ten centimeters wide.

But VW is not alone with its hot-blooded show car: Audi has again prepared an eye-catcher for Lake Worthersee. It should be a bit fresh for a swim. But because a proper bikini figure can’t hurt at the GTI meeting, the Bavarians are now slimming down the TT again and showing a coupe that has literally become a track and field athlete with an empty weight of 1111 kilos. After all, that’s 300 kilos less than the standard TT RS.

Driven by a 310 hp four-cylinder, the TT has a power-to-weight ratio of just 3.6 kilograms per hp and should therefore be easy to move. In any case, when sprinting to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds, it takes 1.3 seconds off the production model. And a top speed of 280 km / h is not to be sniffed at either.

Comprehensive diet for the athlete

The Bavarians achieved the diet success with a whole range of measures: The body alone has lost 43 pounds and, together with the add-on parts, about 100 kilos. The bucket seats made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic weigh 22 kilograms, the exterior mirrors become small cameras, the rims are 20 kilograms lighter, the springs are made of GRP material and the battery works with lithium ions and therefore weighs only four kilograms.

They have even saved on the name: they didn’t use metal letters as usual, but only put it on the sheet with foil. Otherwise they would have paid another pound straight away for “Audi ultra quattro Concept”.

The third hot spur from the VW group comes from Seat. The Spaniards are so proud of the new Leon SC and so convinced of its sporting potential that they quickly converted the two-door into a Cup Racer. The significantly slimmed-down three-door is powered by a two-liter turbo gasoline engine that has been tuned to 330 hp and achieves a maximum torque of 350 Nm.

A seat for 113,000 euros

The car has almost 40 centimeters more track width and is accordingly full on the road. He also has distinctive spoilers and sills. And so that reason is not neglected, there is a racing equipment and a safety cage.

The new Lion King is not quite as potent as the GTI study and technically as clever as the Audi. But it has other qualities: Where the Golf and TT were built just for the show, the Leon will soon go into production: It is quite possible that it will be at the start in the 2014 racing season, says Matthias Rabe, Chief Development Officer.

The Spaniards have even calculated a price – and that’s the catch: the version with DSG automatic is already around 83,000 euros and the long-distance racer with sequential gearbox even costs 113,000 euros.
