A two-class society is emerging on Germany’s roads – the masses drive small and economical, the elite show off their horsepower. Social change can be seen under the bonnet.

E.sometimes he was 132 km / h too fast, Bushido admitted that, and in between his account in Flensburg swelled to a record-breaking 27 points. The song "Mein Revier" became his credo and an anthem on the streets of Berlin-Neukolln: "I’ll come in a 7 Series BMW, S8 as a coupe, I’ll accelerate through the city, the red lights are no problem."

Most recently, the former ghetto child raced through the capital in a matt black Mercedes CL, flanked by his friends in lowered S-Classes. Apparently Bushido feels invulnerable in it, because: "My AMG is armored like a ninja turtle."

Bushido’s preference for wide tires and burn-outs represents a blatant turning point: Germany, one of the world’s leading motorist nations, is on the way to becoming a two-class society. The difference between the average and above average motorized vehicles is increasing.

Engine performance that goes beyond measure

Because while with the mass models like Ford Focus, VW Golf and Opel Astra shrink the engines and slim down the bodywork, the manufacturers serve an elitist customer base with high-quality models. For AMG and other German Audi tuners (quattro GmbH) and BMW (M GmbH) upgrading is a profitable business with in some cases double-digit growth rates.

Even those who do not belong to the premium manufacturers have recently been involved: At Volkswagen, the focus is on the potent R models; Opel launches OPC models and Hyundai is working flat out on an in-house tuning company.

The engine performance with which the high-performance vehicles come up, blow up every traditional measure. Even as an entry-level model, the AMG-A-Class (A45) has an output of 360 hp. VW is working on a Golf that has around 400 hp will have.

The upcoming Audi RS3 should also penetrate this dimension. At the same time, in the normal Golf, meticulous care is taken to ensure that the engines do not fail too lavishly and that the vehicle weight does not increase too much. You have to make sure that the carmakers will meet the strict CO2 requirements of the EU.

It becomes even more extreme a step above. The Audi RS4, BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG have nothing in common with mid-range cars in view of the number of horsepower well above the 400 horsepower mark. And bump over it BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 AMG with the 600 PS brand in an extra upper class.

The sound of the car is also being fine-tuned

With such engine powers It is hardly surprising that the speed limit of 250 km / h, which the German automotive industry agreed on at the end of the 1980s, is now obsolete. Most types of the German noble smiths can be opened to 280, 300 or 305 km / h.

Once it was hoped that the voluntary maximum limit of 250 km / h would lead to a discussion of the speed limit to avoid; apparently the tuners are more certain of their cause than ever.

The jump in performance of the wild derivatives is accompanied by an impressive soundscape that could perfectly accentuate Bushido’s chant. It announces the unbridled desire for dominance on Germany’s streets.

The pithy tones, from a dark rumble to an aggressive hissing to hoarse screeching operate in the scene under the term "Sound Engineering".

At Daimler, 250 employees are now trying their hand at sound art. When it bubbles and pops when you take off the accelerator, like a historic racing car at the Mille Miglia classic car race, the acousticians have done a great job.

Lost brands are supposed to be resurrected

The look is also more martial than ever. Thirty years ago people mocked the compact rear spoiler of the Mercedes-Benz 190 E 2,3-16, today an A-Class can be fitted ex works with carbon fiber trim, roof spoiler and front splitter.

With their huge air scoops, wheel sizes up to 21 inches, eye-catching wings and highly polished exhaust tailpipes, these cars stand there like doped heavy athletes, whether with the four rings in the radiator grille or BMW propellers.

Lost brands promise a revival. Renault wants to revive the sports car manufacturer Alpine; the project has become such a high priority that they have parted ways with the inventors at Caterham, with whom it originally cooperated. Alpine is now a matter for the boss.

Lexus brings further models of the sporty F-series, Cadillac is pursuing the same approach with its V-models. In Korea it will be at Hyundai give a sporty, dynamic "N-series".

For normal customers, the engine performance drops

It is doubtful whether normal customers can also benefit from the explosion in performance. At the Vienna Motor Symposium, Rolf Dreisbach from the development service provider AVL List in Graz predicted that the gap between consumption-optimized concepts and extremely performance-oriented approaches would become even greater because their high-performance models are "extremely important" to the corporations. Liter outputs of up to 250 hp are only a matter of form.

The mass market, according to Dreisbach and the unanimous opinion of the experts in the Vienna Hofburg, must be prepared for a further decline in engine performance. With dynamic-looking design packages that imitate the style of highly motorized top models, the simply motorized entry-level models have enough gloss, argue the PR departments of the premium manufacturers.

So far, the bill has worked brilliantly for the manufacturers. Many high-performance customers have given up their restraint and now proudly present their red brake calipers, carbon spoilers and rally stripes.

These features set AMG, Quattro and M owners apart from conventional models at first glance. The extremely sporty SL65 AMG is now celebrating a comeback, which many years ago was considered too chubby.

Former Gossenkinder now also cruise in the Benz

The discreet twelve-cylinder SL 600, on the other hand, has dropped out of the range: The model was no longer in demand. This Mercedes in particular was a symbol of the philistine for a long time, stood for understatement and solidity. Now he symbolizes a social change.

The typical Benz driver no longer exists, even a former Gossenkind is allowed to accelerate with the star on the hood. Bushido’s rap colleague recently tested Cro a tuned 190 for the trade magazine “Auto, Motor und Sport” from 1990.

In the past, Mercedes was more associated with its brand ambassadors Veronica Ferres and Boris Becker.
