Small car, big engine: This is a recipe for a lot of driving fun, believes Aston Martin boss Ulrich Bez. Wherever the world is downsizing, he now even installs a twelve-cylinder in the Vantage. The two-seater only needs 4.2 seconds to catapult itself to 100 km / h.

B.entley runs on bio-ethanol, Ferrari shows an eco-study, Porsche discovers the automatic start-stop and Lamborghini is committed to lightweight construction: If the competitors should bake smaller rolls, the clocks are different for Aston Martin. While the whole world is following the idea of ​​downsizing and relying on small, turbocharged engines instead of large displacements and many cylinders, company boss Ulrich Bez is sticking to the old motto: nothing can replace displacement except with even more displacement. For this reason, even the 517 hp twelve-cylinder from the DBS is now squeezed under the hood of the rather compact Vantage.

That sounds technically as overwrought as a Smart with a V6 engine and, on top of that, it is hardly compatible with the current mood between climate worries and economic woes. But the first trip in the new top model of the just 4.38 meter long coupe proves Bez right: the unusual pairing of small car and large engine fits perfectly.

Anyone who accepts a surcharge of almost 50 percent compared to the eight-cylinder and transfers an impressive 169,500 euros to Gaydon does not simply get four cylinders, 1.3 liter displacement and 90 hp more. Instead, Aston Martin delivers with the V12 Vantage a well-trained and well-balanced driving machine that you would love to never get out of again.

“This car is not made for a leisurely stroll down the country road. It challenges the driver and encourages them to constantly accelerate, ”says Bez outlining the objective before sending his guests on a test drive over hidden branch routes between the Nurburgring and the Moselle valley. Then all you can hear is the brief scream of the six-liter engines, when the key disappears in the glass ignition lock and the power plant starts to work, and the cars roar away.

The eye cannot follow them for long: the maximum of 570 Nm only takes 4.2 seconds to catapult the two-seater to 100 km / h. Faster than the driver would like, only the police’s radar eyes can see him. Clack, clack, clack, you work your way up on the solid metal gear knob, drive the V12 on four, five, six thousand tours and you can hardly believe that you already have over 170 things on your watch. If you don’t calm down very quickly, you will soon be taking a public bus.

Intoxicated by speed

The rush of the lawn could even continue here at 305 km / h. You can hardly feel that there is a chunk of an engine on the front axle. The twelve-cylinder engine assembled at Ford in Cologne weighs a whopping 100 kilos more than the V8 previously used. But with new rims and ceramic brakes, the British are saving most of the extra weight exactly where it really matters – at the four corners. Because the seats and many trim parts are baked from carbon, the V12 Vantage only weighs 50 kilos more and remains extremely handy.

In order for the huge engine to fit under the hood at all, the developers had to dig deep into their bag of tricks and allow themselves to be harassed properly by the boss. After all, it is 30 centimeters longer than the eight-cylinder and leaves little room for trivialities in the 40 centimeter larger DBS. "At first they claimed that it could never work," says Bez. "But if you motivate your engineers a little, they come up with extraordinary ideas," says the company boss with a determination for which he probably uses thumbscrews and room arrest as an aid to argumentation.

So project manager Paul Baritt and his team spent weeks puzzling, sketching and trying things out until the power plant actually went in and fought for every millimeter. Even the ribs on the hoses for the fresh air were planed off so that the lid would still be on at the end. You can no longer expect a particularly high level of driving comfort from the V12 Vantage. Anyone who wants to cruise should buy a DBS. Of course, you sit on soft leather here too, the consoles are coated with piano lacquer, an automatic air conditioning system dries the sweat from your forehead, and the Vantage breathes British craftsmanship from every pore.

But while you can roll a few hundred kilometers on the autobahn with a Porsche 911 or Jaguar XK, the Vantage is so tightly tuned that it sometimes crunches your bones – but this is the only way to get the immense power completely and, above all, controlled on the street.
