As the sixth model of the Mini brand, the roadster will be launched in spring 2012. To enjoy the open air, however, you have to lend a hand yourself.
NAfter Mini launched its first two-seater with the Coupe in October, the roadster version was only a matter of time. BMW has now presented the purist alternative to the mini convertible and will launch it on the market in spring.
The design of the 3.73 meter long roadster is based on the coupe. The short muzzle, the equally short stern and its dome-shaped fabric roof form a classic three-box structure.
In addition, there are the typical brand insignia such as round headlights, minimal overhangs and the vertical rear lights.
From a speed of 80 km / h, an automatically extending rear spoiler ensures greater driving stability.
By dispensing with the rear seat, there is a trunk volume of 240 liters available – almost twice as much as the mini convertible. By folding down the rear bench, the luggage compartment can also be expanded to include the storage space behind the two seats.
Driving pleasure without compromise
That it is with the Mini Roadster The roof construction shows that the focus should consistently be on driving fun and not on comfort. There is no electric motor, the driver provides fresh air manually. It should be so quick and easy that opening it is worthwhile even for short periods of sunshine.
Otherwise, the roadster, which is driven via the front wheels, offers electromechanical power steering, a torsionally rigid body and, for an additional charge, an electronic limited-slip differential. Sports suspension is also available as an option.
Engines up to 211 hp
The same engines are available for the drive as in the Coupe. A 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 122 hp forms the entry point, followed by the turbo version with 184 hp.
If that’s not enough, you can choose the particularly sporty John Cooper Works variant with 211 hp.
The only diesel on offer is a 2.0-liter engine with 143 hp. With a standard consumption of 4.3 liters, the diesel is the most economical choice.
A manual six-speed gearbox takes care of the power transmission, and an automatic six-speed gearbox is available for an extra charge.
The list of surcharges
The basic equipment is quite decent for mini standards. Air conditioning, distance sensors for the stern and CD radio are always on board. Six airbags and roll bars made of polished stainless steel ensure safety.
Xenon headlights, adaptive cornering lights, sports seats and a rear rack preparation are available for an extra charge.
A sports button for the center console is also available. With it, the driver can adjust the characteristics of the steering and accelerator pedal.
In addition, there are plenty of decorative items such as rally stripes and interior accessories with which the customer can design the roadster according to their personal taste.
Prices for the sixth model in the Mini family are not yet known. The coupe is on the list for at least 21,200 euros, and the roadster is likely to have another hefty surcharge.
Few of competitors
The two-seater hardly has to fear direct competition. The few competitors in the mini roadster segment include the more classically proportioned Mazda MX-5 (22,290 euros), the small steel roof convertible Renault Wind (16,900 euros) and the exotic Lotus Elise (34,450 euros).
