Cadillac brings the compact SUV XT4 to Europe. Initially only with a diesel engine.
This combination is amazing: the Cadillac XT4 will initially come to Europe exclusively with a 2-liter diesel engine. On the one hand, this is very unusual for an American car, and on the other hand, because diesel is having an increasingly difficult time in Europe.
Nevertheless, the parent company GM has developed a completely new compression-ignition engine in the engine development center in Turin. This is immediately noticeable during a cold start and still seems a bit rough and present even at low speeds. But at the latest on the freeway it is hardly audible and looks as cultivated as one might expect in a Cadillac.
As a touring car on the highway, the American is doing well anyway. With 174 hp and 381 Nm of torque, which are already available from 1500 revolutions, it is powerful enough to keep its weight of 1.8 tons going. It is shifted via a 9-speed automatic, which does its job almost imperceptibly – and contributes to the fact that the XT4, with a factory consumption of 6.9 l/100 km, belies the cliche of the thirsty American.
The comfortable overall impression also includes the gently tuned chassis, the soft and comfortable seats and the good noise insulation. So nothing stands in the way of an extended "road trip" based on the American model.
Safe instead of exciting
The XT4 defies the traditional cliche that American cars are only good for straight stretches, with stoic composure. He doesn't even try to mime the nimble athlete, but masters curves accurately and without worrying side tilt. This ensures a very safe driving experience – accompanied by the optional all-wheel drive, which was on board for the first test drives. In the "Tour" driving mode, which is primarily designed for everyday use in the city and on the highway, the Ami drives with front-wheel drive to save fuel. In the other drive programs (Sport, AWD, Offroad, Snow/Ice), however, the rear axle is permanently driven.
Initially, the XT4 comes to Switzerland exclusively as a "Launch Edition" with a diesel engine and a choice of front or all-wheel drive. A four-cylinder petrol engine, which generates 230 hp and 350 Nm of torque from a displacement of two liters plus turbocharger, is to follow in 2021. The petrol engine features cylinder deactivation to optimize consumption and will only be available with all-wheel drive.
The current entry-level model, the "Launch Edition" with front-wheel drive, costs from 50,950 francs.
This basic price already includes numerous comfort extras, such as leather seats, electric seat adjustment, two-zone automatic air conditioning or seat and steering wheel heating. There are also many driving assistants, such as a 360-degree camera, traffic sign recognition or lane departure warning.
If you don't want to do without the safety of all-wheel drive, you have to upgrade to the more expensive "Launch Edition Sport" version: from 56,200 francs with front-wheel drive, an additional 2,200 francs for all-wheel drive. The factory equipment also includes an adaptive cruise control, fully digital instruments including a head-up display, adjustable suspension dampers and numerous other extras that cost an extra charge for many competitors.
In terms of price, the Cadillac XT4 is classified as quite interesting. In addition, with its unique design and its exotic status, it could be interesting for all those who want to consciously stand out from the crowd.
You hardly have to put up with the downsides. The space available on the front seats, as well as on the back seat and in the trunk is at the level usual for this class. The driving comfort is, apart from the occasionally rough diesel, even above average; The fact that the XT4 is not one of the fastest in the segment when it comes to driving dynamics is not tragic for an SUV. However, it is noticeable in the interior that the model has been on the market in the USA for two years.
The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment is simple and clear to use, but it doesn't look quite fresh when it comes to the graphic display. But the touchscreen, like the rest of the interior, feels solid and of high quality. And thanks to the option of using the smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, the system is absolutely sufficient for everyday use.
With the XT4, Cadillac is entering the diesel SUV segment late but convincingly; and is already planning the next step for 2021. Then the Lyriq will follow, a purely electric SUV with a range of 480 kilometers.
