Two electric motors are to drive the new electric city runabout from Audi. The entry is spectacular and is reminiscent of a fighter plane.

F.erdinand Piech should enjoy it: With the Urban Concept from Audi and the Nils from Volkswagen The two brands of the group vie for the best concept for an electric car for the city traffic of tomorrow. The starting shot for both projects was fired almost simultaneously.

But while the VW in the style of the new small car Up is rather sober and cool is drawn, Audi relies on decidedly emotional and sporty shapes.

The starting point was the idea of urban mobility with a "Coolness" to bring in connection – and to distance oneself from a more academic approach, such as that represented by the Smart or the BMW scooter C1.

Although these vehicles meet all the practical requirements, they are only of limited use as style icons.

Similarities to the Type D Silver Arrow

The urban concept from Audi differs from them not least in that it draws on borrowings from racing. In any case, the silhouette of the electric city racer bears striking similarities to that of the classic Audi Silver Arrow Type D – including the large Audi radiator grille. The 21-inch wheels are also an unmistakably sporty statement.

Thanks to systematic lightweight construction with an aluminum spaceframe and a monocoque made of carbon fiber composite into which the seat shells are foamed, Audi achieves a curb weight of around 400 kilograms without batteries.

Boarding like a fighter plane

The construction requires relatively high side walls, from which a number of other elements result – for example the rear-sliding polycarbonate cockpit, which serves as an entry and is reminiscent of fighter planes.

In addition to the open and closed position, it can be fixed in a third position.

Audi can do without air conditioning. As an alternative, Audi has developed a Spyder variant that can do without the pulpit at all.

The staggered arrangement of the seat shells is particularly noticeable, with which Audi on the one hand preserves a relatively slim car body with a small frontal area, but on the other hand avoids the impression of a cigar-shaped cabin scooter, which would be the result of arranging the two seats one behind the other.

The position of the staggered seat shells is rigid; for this, the pedals and the steering wheel can be moved. The batteries are positioned in front of and behind the seat shells.

After-work project by young savages

The Urban Concept is powered by two electric motors and can go up to a governed 130 km / h. "The Urban Concept was planned as an electric car from the start", reports the head of Audi exterior design, Achim Badstubner.

A team of "young savages" initially pushed the Urban Concept forward as a purely after-work project and relatively soon also under the benevolent eyes of Development Director Michael Dick. Just a year has passed from the first sketches to the IAA Show Car.

Series production is not completely ruled out. If the Urban Concept is actually to be built, detailed work is still required. It is unclear how the vehicle is classified. With a weight of up to 400 kilograms, it could also be classified as a quad – and thus the approval requirements are lower than for full-fledged cars.

The fact that Audi does not want to compromise on safety is proven not least by the rigid structure or the steering wheel equipped with the airbag from the A1.

Should the Urban Concept actually come, it could hit the nerve of a generation of car buyers who would like to drive electric and emission-free, but can do without the eco-attitude of most electric cars. Not only Ferdinand Piech should enjoy it.
