Lena and Tobias have created their little piece of America in a barn behind the house: the walls are decorated with US flags, Mustang emblems and a Route 66 sign. In the centre but her little car collection stands.

Tobias ’passion for American cars began when he was six; back then he saw a Ford Mustang and was blown away. The fascination has remained. Tobia is often screwings to the cars until late at night.

For the ignorant, the 1929 Ford Hotrod may be just a piece of scrap screwed together, for Lena and Tobias it is the epitome of rock‘n’roll.

The most normal vehicle in their fleet is the Ford F350 XLT, where normal is relative. Fortunately, the couple has very understanding neighbors who enjoy the rattle of the diversen engines do not feel disturbed.

After an accident, nothing was like before. Then Lena discovered her love for US cars and everything made sense again. The Norddeutsche now runs a small private fleet of vehicles with her husband.

Tobias takes another drag from his American Spirit and points to Lena’s 1929 Ford Hotrod: “Look, you don’t know it yet. It was channeled, chopped, cleaned – the full program ”. In non-hot rodder language, this means: the body crouches low on the frame, the pillars are shortened, and the roof is thus lowered, most of the chrome jewelry is now in the parts box.

From the matt brown cabin, the handlebars look over the intake manifold of the 6.5-liter Chevy V8. For guys who don’t have anything to do with old American carts, this part is just a junk pile. For 31-year-old Tobi and his 27-year-old wife Lena, it’s the epitome of rock‘n’roll on wheels. How could it come to that??

“I was six years old. My father and I were driving our car on a country road, ”recalls Tobias. “We met a Ford Mustang, a 67, and my father said to me: ‘Look, this is the most beautiful car in the world.’” From that moment on, Tobias knew that he had to have one at some point.

He has since sold his first Mustang, a red coupe. “At some point it just wasn’t fun anymore. At meetings there were sometimes 20 Mustangs in a row, which laypeople can only distinguish by their color. Lena’s copy is a 1968 model, a so-called S-Code. With 6.4 liter big block V8, 325 SAE PS and manual transmission. Steve McQueen drove him as Lieutenant Frank Bullitt in the film of the same name. A dream of a pony car.

The Fastback is Lena’s first US car. Separation excluded, "except maybe for a 50 Mercury". She has been in a wheelchair since a riding accident eleven years ago. Back then, the passionate rider fell on the head of two poorly secured, 250 kilo straw bales in the stable. The diagnosis: paraplegia, from the fifth cervical vertebra.

The hall is a place of longing for America fans

But neither Lena nor Tobias quarrel with fate. The couple make the best of it. "True to the motto ‘No arms, no cookies’, I give my best," says Lena with a laugh. She has a rough sense of humor. Three years after her accident, she decided that her life must have meaning again. "Back then, my father and brother took me to Street Mag, the largest US car meeting in Hamburg," says Lena. "That was what happened to me."

Lena’s family helps her put her “crazy idea” of buying a burgundy Ford Mustang into practice. The trained hairdresser cannot drive it herself, as she can only move the heels of her hands. “But I prefer to go with you anyway,” she says. She exchanges ideas about ponycars in internet forums – and that is how she gets to know Tobias.

Today the two are married. Fortunately, Tobias can repair everything that has wheels. "Tobias likes to screw deep into the night when I’ve been sleeping for a long time," says Lena. He has just taken apart his 1970 Plymouth Cuda. The original plum shade of "Plum Crazy" is supposed to give way to a juicy note of lime.

The wind turbine technician is not a type of big word. And for a photo just pretending to be fiddling with the 360-cui V8, he finds it kind of strange, but for once does it anyway. His don’t-do-me-attitude is deceptive, he just needs something to thaw.

The hall behind the house is a place of longing for America fans. With Route 66 motifs, stars and stripes banners and a fully equipped American diner in the private room. But of course it’s all just a backdrop, the main role is played by the fleet: Lena’s 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 Fastback, the crazy Ford Hotrod, Tobi’s Plymouth Cuda from 1970 and the "fat one", a Ford F-350 Super Duty from 1994.

Neighbors are not bothered by the thundering of the eight-cylinder

A huge poster hangs on the wall behind the hot rod. It shows a southern still life that one likes to hang onto. A wrecked road cruiser, forgotten and half-burned by the Texan sun. The viewer seeks parallels to the here and now.

Sure, there are no cacti in the wasteland of northern Germany, rather lush meadows. And the light is also different than on Big Bend in Texas. Metropolitan citizens are drawn here, if at all, because of the healthy country air. Or because of the rest. Schleswig-Holstein, land of unlimited possibilities? At least as long as the wheels are turning and the big eight-cylinder rumbles at the front.

At the end of the day, one thing is clear: Here, in Nortorf, about 80 kilometers north of Hamburg, Lena and Tobias are doing their thing. And the only thing that could shake anyone here is the roar of an eight-cylinder when Tobias floods the quadruple carburetor with fuel again. But anyone who lives here already knows it. “We have very tolerant neighbors,” assures Lena.
