Can you give a 356 to the tuner? Rob Emory answered this question with a clear "yes" and immediately lends a hand himself. The perfectly shaped oldie, of all things, is his specialty.

S.It doesn’t look particularly glamorous here: unadorned low-rise buildings, roller shutters. It’s the Lancaster industrial area, an hour’s drive northeast of Los Angeles. But if you take a look behind the roller doors, as a fan of a certain sports car brand, you will first forget the time. And possibly turn back indignantly at some point.

There are over a dozen dusty Porsches in garages and workshops – from the 356 to the early 911. They are waiting for Rod Emory to breathe new life into them.

Emory is a tinkerer. Allegedly he developed the capsule from which Felix Baumgartner started his record jump with the parachute for Red Bull. He earns his living building promotional vehicles for football clubs and beverage manufacturers or working for the neighboring armaments companies Boeing and Lockheed.

The stealth bombers buzz in the sky

But Emory’s heart doesn’t beat for driving football helmets or mini pick-ups with huge Red Bull cans on the loading area, nor for the stealth bombers buzzing in the skies over Lancaster. Rather, he only loves the sports car from Stuttgart.

This passion was literally put into the cradle of the mid-forties with the friendly rascal face. His father was the chief mechanic at one of the largest Porsche dealerships in California. When his buddies were on the football field, he ran through the dealership. “My children’s room was the workshop and my playground was the spare parts store,” he says.

And when the other boys were in the dance class, he restored his first Porsche 356 at the age of 14. Unfortunately, Emory has another gene in his blood. That of grandfather Neil Emory, who even made it into the Hall of Fame of American tuners with the hot rods from his Valley Custom Shop in the fifties.

Contempt in spite of love

Unfortunately, because what he’s doing on the workbenches he has inherited from grandfather should more than irritate Porsche purists. Perhaps they would even call the American a charlatan or a criminal. It doesn’t help that Emory throws the metal sheets by hand for days, gets lost in details and even devotes himself to the metal with love.

Because torn between his father’s Porsche chemistry and his grandfather’s free spirit, the junior has not become a restorer, but a tuner. For this type of screwdriver, the original condition of cars is known to be rather unimportant.

In other words: Emory has a liberal attitude towards the rolling legends.

Therefore, under the relatively cautiously modified sheet metal of the 356, the technology of significantly younger 911s is usually hidden: Emory swaps the chassis and brakes, he refurbishes the interiors as if the classic cars had come straight from the assembly line, and he assembles new engines and transmissions.
