Team Oracle USA wins the America’s Cup
9: 8 after 1: 8: It was one of the most legendary comeback races in sports history. The 17th and final race decided the America’s Cup between New Zealand and the USA.
D.he "greatest comeback in sporting history" was made by James Spithill, skipper and helmsman of Oracle Team USA, after the 1: 8 intermediate result against Team New Zealand at the 34th. America’s Cup announced. Today this courageous vision became a reality.
The defending champion from the USA had won seven races in a row in a spectacular race to catch up, and now the decisive last one. From the point of view of the New Zealanders, who already won the America’s Cup in 1995 and 2000, this is a disaster. With their last victory, the Americans successfully defended the most important sailing trophy in the world.
Triumph in San Francisco Bay
The crew around skipper James Spithill won the decisive 19th race in the Bay of San Francisco against Team New Zealand around helmsman Dean Barker and crowned one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history with a 9: 8. After a penalty, Oracle started with minus two points and was in the meantime 1: 8 behind.
The race to catch up is mainly due to four reasons: The Americans have continued to improve their AC-72 catamaran, the US team is now sailing almost perfectly in contrast to the start phase, Ben Ainslie from Great Britain is a masterly tactician and opponent for the USA New Zealand with skipper Dean Barker has recently become increasingly nervous.
