Refueling is worthwhile in Luxembourg, but not in Italy
It can be worthwhile to compare the fuel prices before starting your journey abroad

Before going abroad, it can be worthwhile to compare the gasoline prices on the route and at the destination, because the fuel is cheaper than at home. A detour is only worthwhile in certain cases.
VBefore going on holiday abroad, it can be worthwhile to check the gasoline prices on the route and at the destination. The neighboring countries to the east are traditionally cheap, says Andreas Holzel from ADAC. You can also save on refueling in Luxembourg and Austria. Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark, on the other hand, are more expensive than Germany, while in France the prices are about the same.
An overview of the European average prices for petrol can be found here (ADAC) and here (AvD).
The tendencies are relatively stable, but – as in Germany – there could be strong regional fluctuations. “Petrol stations on motorways are also becoming more and more expensive abroad, for example,” says Holzel. So it makes a difference whether a driver refueles on the Brenner route to the Adriatic Sea or in one of the side valleys.
Sometimes a little detour can be worthwhile, for example when passing Luxembourg on the way to France. "A detour of more than 50 kilometers will only rarely pay off."
Do not drive completely empty
The ADAC spokesman also warns against running the tank almost empty because of the cheap fuel that is waiting behind the border. The petrol station network can be thinner there. "Travelers are better off avoiding the hassle of getting stranded abroad."
In advance, it can make sense to install a fuel price app for the travel destination on your smartphone. “These applications exist for Austria and Denmark, for example. It helps to be smart. "
While the market transparency office in Germany supplies many such apps with current price data, the data abroad are not necessarily reliable, the expert warns.
