Varta plans confirmed: Lithium-ion cells for electric cars-varta

The German technology company VARTA has announced large lithium-ion round cells for battery electric vehicles. The new cells made a difference above all for the next generation of performance vehicles and for other non-automotive applications, said VARTA-CEO Herbert appearance at the first Capital Markets Day of the company. “We believe that our round cell formats are excellent alternatives due to their unique features for the construction of battery-electric vehicles in the performance area,” said light.

Varta had announced its high-performance lithium-ion round cell V4Drive in the format 21700 (2.1 cm diameter, 7 cm height) at the beginning of this year. Manufacturers such as Tesla already successfully set the battery cells to this format in their electric cars. VARTA now transfers its V4Drive technology to even larger cell formats with the aim of driving electric cars, while providing high ranges and additional performance for dynamic driving.

“Today’s batteries offer automobile engineers the opportunity to build cars with great range. V4Drive will also offer additional performance qualities, “says VARTA CEO Sparkle. This makes you “ideal for the performance area of the automotive industry”. An electric car operated with V4Drive cells should therefore be able to reset large distances and at the same time offer more dynamic driving. In addition, the new batteries are “loaded much faster than it is possible today.”To what extent the company will enter the production of V4Drive by the end of this year, VARTA will decide according to certificate according to customer demand.

Armin Hessenberger, CFO of Varta AG, said during the event that the company has the financial power to initiate the next growth resin. “Varta has so far produced almost half a billion coinpower cells” and thus experience in the production of small lithium-ion cells collected. This know-how is now transferred to the production of larger, rechargeable lithium-ion cells. The approach is “the market cells with better, with other properties to offer compared to what is available today,” announces Hessenberger.

The pilot production of the V4Drive cells in 21700 format should start the end of the year, the mass production two years later. The production capacity should be at least 2 GWh. Rainer Hald, CTO of VARTA AG, explains that the production of larger lithium-ion round cells of synergies with the production of smaller lithium-ion round cells named Coinpower can benefit. “Our technologies build on each other: We have transferred the innovative foil seal design of the hearing aid batteries – where we have become the market leader – in Coinpower and combined with other innovations. We now do the same with V4drive: We transfer the know-how of CoinPower to V4Drive and add more innovations.”

  1. That will be a narrow box, Varta. Sure, the stated 6 minutes charging time are already an announcement. But … Limiting will be the charging station and not the battery in the future. At 300 kW charging power (and these things are not the standard rather) are only 30 kWh charging energy “tankable” in 6 minutes. So remains the primary use of a smaller additional battery for recuperation and power boost function to protect and relieve the large battery.

In particular, the coming solids batteries, which are very problematic in relation to the charging / discharge speed, are likely to benefit very much. But any further technological improvement endangers the inventory of this niche, especially since Verta wants to compete in the high price segment.

Nevertheless, I wish Varta all the best, every European counterweight for the Asian dominance of the battery market can only have a positive impact.

What did they do the last years? Sleep?

If that is not too late in 2 years ..

    It remains exciting
