With the eco Up and its siblings Seat Mii and Skoda Citigo, VW defends its top position in the eco-ranking of the Verkehrsclub Deutschland. There are also environmentally friendly alternatives for families.
W.According to a current ranking by the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), if you want to be environmentally friendly by car, you should rely on natural gas and hybrid vehicles. In the so-called Auto Environment List 2013/2014 of the association, which is committed to ecological mobility, three almost identical natural gas cars from the Volkswagen Group share first place, as the VCD announced in Berlin.
Once again, the VW Group’s natural gas microcars, the identical models VW eco up !, Seat Mii Ecofuel and Skoda Citigo CNG Green tec, have taken the lead. The two Japanese – the Lexus CT 200h and the Toyota Prius Hybrid – also defended their position from the previous year.
The top ten included the three VW models and one other VW car, the VW Golf 1.4 TGI Blue Motion, Japanese types only. In addition to models from Toyota and Lexus, there were also models from Mitsubishi, Nissan and Suzuki.
In its Okotest, the VCD assesses the environmental balance. The most important factor here is the pollution caused by the emission of the greenhouse gas CO2 and other pollutants such as nitrogen oxides. According to the club, noise pollution is also included in the calculation. In total, this time the testers examined more than 400 current car models.
Alternative drives on the advance
Measured in terms of CO2 emissions alone, the three VW natural gas vehicles and the Toyota Yaris Hybrid were on par with 79 grams per kilometer. However, the VW cars won in the other categories due to their better evaluation. The Yaris Hybrid came in sixth overall.
Among the ten ecologically best models were a total of four natural gas vehicles, five hybrid cars and three small gasoline-powered vehicles due to multiple placements due to equality of points. The alternatives to the conventional combustion engines diesel and gasoline are becoming more and more popular, explained the VCD.
Natural gas burns much cleaner than gasoline or diesel and therefore has clear environmental advantages, says the VCD. A hybrid drive combines an electric and a combustion engine.
The current VCD environmental list also deals with the question: How much car does a family need? In Germany, the trend is towards large SUVs, but according to VCD, their environmental values are "mostly absolutely out of the question".
Skoda with the best price-performance ratio
However, seven of the top ten family cars with at least five seats produced less than 100g CO2 / km. As in the previous year, the first two places went to the hybrid duo Toyota Prius Hybrid, followed by the Toyota Prius + Hybrid. The seven-seater Prius + in particular shows that even a family with a lot of space can drive in an environmentally conscious way.
Several diesel vehicles are also convincing. The estate cars Seat Ibiza ST 1.2 TDI Ecomotive, Skoda Fabia Combi GreenLine 1.2 TDI and Ford Focus 1.6TDCi ECOnetic 88g tournament have a very good price-environmental ratio. The list price is less than 20,000 euros. The Skoda Fabia achieves the best price-environment ratio with prices starting at 13,500 euros.
