The myth is coming back to life: it was cult in the 1960s, and now there is a new edition. If you are looking for a more exclusive retro scooter with style, you can hardly avoid the Lambretta LN 125.

I.In the heyday of scooters, Vespa and Lambretta were two different worldviews, the drivers of both camps fought fierce competitions on two wheels and sometimes cracked their fists at each other. The long-standing dispute over the brand name and its use fits into this picture.

The new edition of the Lambretta has the official blessing of the rights holder. No question about it, the Lambretta has a stylish shell and, due to the original model, is the most visually convincing interpretation of a classic scooter.

It has always been a bit more angular and straighter than the Vespa. The line still looks more stretched, slimmer and therefore a little sportier. This impression is supported by a wing-shaped "side cheek" with three silver struts.

What has remained in the modern interpretation of the Italian classic is the rear fender, which extends far back. The Lambretta was designed by Alessandro Tartarini, whose father founded the Italjet design company. Its name and the Italian national colors are proudly emblazoned on the front of the scooter. But that was also about the local identity.

Inner values ​​are not as good as the optics

An air-cooled drive from Sym in Taiwan works under the body, which is largely made of sheet metal. The Lambretta is produced by the Taiwanese scooter and ATV manufacturer Gamax.

Plastic can be found mainly in the front area, on the instruments and the – admittedly fancy – lamps. The main headlights and taillights, which are enclosed in a heptagon, are a feast for the eyes, but unfortunately the modern LED indicators are not.

The LN 125 also exudes style and class on its rubber grips, for example – they have an embossed “Lambretta” logo. That’s just great.

As beautiful as the external appearance is, the inner values ​​are disappointing. It feels like three seconds before the Lambretta starts moving after turning the throttle.

At 88 km / h it is over

And even then, the automatic is rather difficult to get going. With nine horsepower at 8000 revolutions per minute and 8.5 Newton meters of torque, the 111 kilogram scooter can only barely reach 80 km / h on the speedometer.

The promised 90 km / h top speed can hardly be achieved. At the latest at 88 km / h is over. Fortunately, the opposite of this is the brakes.

They show enough bite and have the LN 125 firmly under control in the event of deceleration, even if only a drum brake is decelerating at the rear. The chassis is quite stiff, but despite the small 12-inch wheels, the load can hardly be brought off the track even by changing road surfaces.

However, the standard Maxxis tires no longer run quite as well on wet asphalt. Thanks to the classic design, the Lambretta actually conveys the driving experience of the 60s and 70s.

Nice case, little storage space

In curves it shows a noticeable rear-heaviness. So retro here too. You should enjoy the nostalgic ride back in time, but mainly in the city, where the nine hp are better off than on the country road.

In front of the cinema or ice cream parlor, the two-tone LN 125 is presented in an even more beautiful light. The lack of storage space proves that the Lambretta is above all a designer piece.

More than a luggage hook behind the leg shield as well as a small compartment, only suitable for mini helmets, under the – lovingly designed – seat bench with decorative stitching should not be expected, because the front panel contains the telescopic fork and, according to old-fashioned tradition, the tank is located under the brown seat pad.

Reserve light reports very early

Here, too, the rebirth shows class: the tank cap is made of sheet metal like in the old days and already exuded a certain patina on the almost new vehicle. A small plastic tube helps insert the tap and prevents it from overflowing too quickly.

The maximum of six liters are eliminated after around 150 kilometers on a brisk journey. The loss of fuel is accompanied by an extremely nervous display. Even after a quarter of gasoline is out of the tank, the reserve light occasionally speaks out, and when the tank is half empty it flickers almost regularly. The other control lights could use a little more radiance, which are difficult to see even when the sky is cloudy.

Conclusion: The Lambretta LN 125 exudes a lot of nostalgic charm, but some conceptual compromises have to be made. With a 200 with a classic manual gearbox and a top speed of a little over 100 km / h, you could get weak. But first of all a (shorter) small force variant with 50 cubic meters is being considered.
