Everything used to be better, wasn’t it? Some car fans like to say that. Today’s cars simply lack a certain something. You are emotionless! Often there may be something to these statements, but not always.

The comparison between the BMW M 535i shows how impressively cars have changed over three decades (1985) and the brand new BMW i4 M50 (2021). The difference in performance alone is gigantic! M 535i: 218 hp / i4 M50: 544 hp. And then of course there is the thing with the drives! At that time combustion and now electric.

From today’s point of view, it seems strange: BMW is regularly beaten for too daring design. Keyword: kidney. With the time lag, the E28 looks timeless precisely because of its simple look. What was criticized as bland at the time is what makes it so attractive today.

According to BMW, the i4 is a four-door Gran Coupe, something like the electric counterpart to the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe. The model, however, shares the base with 3 and 4 units. Interesting: The dimensions of the i4 are almost identical to those of the 5 Series from 1985. Modern cars have actually become larger, by exactly one vehicle class in around 30 years.

From today’s point of view, the technology of the E28 M 535i is simple: a sleek 3.5-liter six-cylinder works under the hood, which, even by today’s standards, pushes ahead surprisingly quietly and in a cultivated manner.

The drivetrain of the i4 M50 is in a different league when it comes to smoothness! The two FSM electric motors also ensure brute propulsion. With the fifth generation of eDrive technology, the electric motor, power electronics and gearbox are contained in one housing, which, according to BMW, leads to high power density and high efficiency.

The energy density of the battery itself was compared to the battery in the current BMW i3 increased by around 20 percent. Under ideal conditions, the range should be up to 521 kilometers.

Incidentally, the range of the E28 with a 70-liter tank is 670 km, but nobody asks about this with this model.
