Volvo today unveiled a study that anticipates the future design of the new all-electric Volvos. The Volvo Concept Recharge seems to be something of a very elongated coupe SUV.

Volvo himself simply classifies the car as an SUV.

The current electric cars from Volvo, such as the XC40 Pure Electric, still share the platform with conventionally powered models. That makes compromises with the proportions and the space available. The next generation of fully electric Volvos, on the other hand, will be based on a platform that is intended exclusively for e-cars. It may be the new Geely SEA electric platform.

This layout recently shown by Volvo could show the new electric SUV

The first vehicle of this second generation of electric vehicles is the SUV shown here. The series version should be the first Volvo to have not just a combination of letters and numbers as a name (such as XC40, V90 etc.), but a real name. Brand boss Håkan Samuelsson revealed this at the end of the online event. He did not say what this would be. We're guessing something typically Scandinavian, if not exactly Smørebrød.

As is usual with pure electric platforms, the new Volvo technology platform offers a flat floor under which the battery pack is located. Because no large internal combustion engine has to be installed at the front, the overhangs can be short and the wheelbase long – which benefits the interior space.

According to Volvo, the Volvo Concept Recharge has rearranged the seats, optimized the roofline and lowered the bonnet. This improves aerodynamics, which in turn reduces power consumption and increases the range. Nevertheless, the raised seating position of an SUV was retained, according to the manufacturer.

Otherwise, the design study should follow the motto "less, but better". Volvo has omitted the radiator grille. If the motto is form follows function, however, we don't know what the ridged front hood is for. The part under the headlights also seems to be more aimed at creating an impression than for a specific benefit.

The Volvo logo with the diagonal bar in the middle has been adopted from the current Volvos. In addition, the new electric Volvo also has a T-shaped "Thor's Hammer" light signature, albeit in a new shape that emphasizes the horizontal.

At the rear, the L-shaped taillights that are typical of the brand appear, which, however, taper towards the top in a dashed line.

Inside there is, as usual, a vertically arranged touchscreen in the middle, which is apparently free. It is said to measure 15 inches. There is also a rather small instrument display, which is also not integrated into the dashboard.

Above all, the front seats with integrated headrests seem to hug the back tightly, while the thigh support seems to be rather flat. There is a wide center console between the front seats, which apparently also floats freely. There is no conventional gear selector lever; modes P, N, R and D are activated with the right pitman arm, as a picture published by Volvo shows (see picture gallery above).

The study should also be prepared for autonomous driving. A lidar developed by Luminar is located on the roof (clearly visible), which is said to play an essential role in Volvo's sensor technology.
