Volvo puts the old S60 exactly 6.5 centimeters higher, calls it CrossCountry – and gives us stomach ache. That can’t be all, can it?

B.ald, soon Volvo will do everything differently. The new XC90 has been illuminated in all its facets for a few months now, and it will finally be launched on the market sometime in spring.

Completely new platform, completely new design language, completely new anyway, everything else too. We can look forward to that – and it should be exciting to see whether the bill will work out for Volvo. The Swedes will not have many attempts, we can hear that the Chinese owners are slowly running out of patience.

Bulky on the outside, very slim on the inside

And now: the S60 CrossCountry. So you take the old limousine and lift it 6.5 centimeters above the ground. “We want to open up further markets with our cross-country models. We already succeeded in doing this in 1997 with the Volvo V70 CrossCountry, and with it we even established a new segment. The new model takes up all the advantages for which our CrossCountry range is known: sporty, distinctive design, off-road capability and an adventurous character, ”says Volvo Manager Lex Kerssemakers.

And it is probably precisely about “other markets”. In Europe, this vehicle will probably find few friends – but maybe China was just waiting for it? Or North Korea? Or the redneck states of the USA, where monster trucks on balloon tires are the order of the day?

Because it is astonishing: the larger Volvo models like the S60, the V70 and the S80 will soon be placed on the new, scalable platform on which the new XC90 is based. It is all the less understandable that the old S60 now has to be cut out as a CrossCountry. It can only be about the number of pieces – the image suffers.

The usual suspects serve as the drive, at Volvo these are only four-cylinder. The S60 CrossCountry will be available with front-wheel and all-wheel drive from April.
