181 hp from a diesel engine only two liters – such values were considered exotic just a few years ago. Volvo is going one step further with its new four-cylinder generation.
Volvo gradually adopted its five- and six-cylinder engines into retirement and launched a new four-cylinder family with a displacement of two liters. The new petrol engines will cover a power range from 140 to 306 hp, the diesel range from 120 to 225 hp. This is such a yield that even the new large off-road vehicle XC90 will drive up exclusively with the four-cylinder from 2015.
The medium-sized 60s series (sedan S60, station wagon V60, SUV XC60) will have to wait a little longer for their 2016/17 makeover, but since the beginning of the year it has been visually and technically younger at dealers.
The heart of the revision was the implantation of three of the new motors. The 306 hp T6 petrol engine (no six-cylinder, just one name) with compressor and turbo-charging, the T5 (no five-cylinder) with 245 hp and the double-charged D4 diesel with 181 hp are now used.
Only 3.8 liters per 100 kilometers
Like the new gasoline engines, it complies with the Euro 6 emissions standard and aims to distinguish itself as particularly economical. Despite a performance increase of eleven percent compared to the previous D4, the standard consumption fell by twelve percent to just 3.8 liters. In the version with the eight-speed automatic transmission, which is also new, an average of 4.2 liters flow through the lines, with the Kombi V60 it is 0.1 liters more each.
These values are made possible by a modified injection process. Volvo calls it i-ART system (Intelligent Accuracy Refinement Technology). Instead of a single pressure sensor in the fuel line, each injection valve has its own sensor. This ensures that each cylinder is supplied with the correct amount of fuel and the optimal injection pressure.
So much for the theory: curves and mountainous roads made the joy of accelerating outweigh the first test drives. 400 Newton meters of torque supported this carefree attitude, the confident and unobtrusive eight-speed automatic did the rest, and suddenly 6.5 l / 100 km were on the display of the on-board computer.
If you are interested in getting close to the normal value in everyday life, a less spirited driving style and activation of the Eco + function is recommended. This special switch on the center console is only available for the automatic version.
The S60 can now also master sailing
If you use Eco +, the engine control and switching points are adjusted for a restrained, economical driving style, and the air conditioning system reduces its output a little. You can also use the coasting function: if you take your foot off the accelerator, the drive train is decoupled and the car “coasts” in idle, undisturbed by the engine brake.
This saves one or two tenth of a liter of fuel, and because the new four-cylinder engine can both start powerfully and whisper economically, saying goodbye to the five-cylinder (in the current D4 with 163 hp and 4.3 l / 100 km) will not be so difficult.
The eight-speed automatic costs 2250 euros extra in the sedan, so that the base price for the D4 version is 36,000 euros. Our test car in the top equipment Summum (from 43,330 euros) leaves nothing to be desired and includes, among other things, 17-inch light alloy wheels, leather upholstery, cruise control, windscreen heating and a music system.
Safety-conscious drivers may go one level lower and put the money saved into the extensive Pro driver assistance package. For 2150 euros it includes an all-round supply of electronics: Adaptive cruise control with emergency braking function including pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind spot assistant, lane change warning, drowsiness warning, traffic sign recognition and traffic jam assistant for automatic braking and acceleration in stop-and-go traffic up to 30 km / h.
There is a solution for the tight trunk
If you let yourself be chauffeured through the traffic jam in rush hour traffic, you have time to look around in the new car and you notice: the interior with the floating center console still looks chic even after four years of construction, the space is not lavish, but good.
Only when going on vacation is it necessary to reconcile the rather small trunk (380 liters) with the luggage requirements in good time. Or you take the station wagon straight away, most of them do that anyway.
