Is it an electric XC60? Or the Polestar 3?
Has Volvo just teased the planned electric version of the XC60? It is entirely possible. Together with the press release on the cooperation with Northvolt the manufacturer sent an X-ray image (see our cover picture above), which could show the next-generation XC60 Pure Electric.
But first to the information that Volvo officially released. The battery cells developed as part of the joint venture with Northvolt are to be used in the next generation of the Volvo XC60:
"The battery cells developed as part of the joint venture will be used in the next fully electric generation of the Volvo XC60 (…)." (Volvo)
It was not yet known that the next XC60 will only be available as an electric car. The current version was introduced in 2017. A model change is likely to be due in 2026 at the latest – because the previous model was also on the market for nine years. Since a generation change is already being discussed, the replacement could also take place earlier.
This is also suggested by the layout image from the Volvo press department. The flat battery plate is reminiscent of the SEA platform from parent company Geely, which Volvo will use avowedly:

The manufacturer does not reveal which vehicle it is. In any case, the Volvo XC40 Pure Electric is not, because as a descendant of the combustion platform Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) it has a rather fissured battery:

It cannot be the Polestar 2 either, because it is also based on CMA and should also not have a flat battery plate. But the picture could be the recently teased Polestar 3 show. The shadowy outlines on the ominous picture above show an elongated, combi-like body, similar to the Polestar 3 teaser picture. In addition, the Polestar 3 should be based on a new platform, which could be SEA:
"The Polestar 3 marks the debut of the new generation of electric vehicle architecture from the Volvo Car Group, which has been developed from the ground up for full electrification." (Volvo Group)
Or there are the first drafts of the Polestar 0 that Volvo mentions in the press release. The Northvolt collaboration is also important for Polestar, according to the press release. Because under the project name Polestar 0, a completely climate-neutral vehicle is to be developed by 2030.
There are currently too many ways to explain the image. But maybe we can find out more at the online event Volvo Cars Tech Moment on June 30, 2021. Then Volvo will announce more details on the future roadmap.
