Volvo Trucks shares battery technology and wants to reduce development and production costs-battery

Next year, truck manufacturer Volvo Trucks will put its first series-produced electric truck on the road. It has now become known that the company would like to make the findings from the battery technology of the e-trucks available to its other brands in order to reduce development and production costs. In this article we have already taken a closer look at the Volvo FL Electric, which was designed for urban delivery traffic or municipal services such as waste management.

The battery technology knowledge that has been collected and developed will not only be shared with truck brands such as UD Trucks (Japan) and Mack Trucks (USA), but also with the company’s bus and construction machinery brands. The Japanese subsidiary UD Trucks could benefit from this, at least in the short term, because they want to put a fully electric version of the Quon heavy truck on the road in 2020. For Volvo Trucks itself, the official presentation of the Volvo FL Electric in May is still ahead. Followed by another presentation of an electrically powered 26-ton truck, at least according to Spiegel Online.

One can understand the motivations of Volvo Trucks. Sharing one’s own knowledge allows the entire group to benefit from it, exploit economies of scale and save on development costs. A similar example of such knowledge sharing is Volkswagen Truck & Bus and Toyota’s commercial vehicle subsidiary Hino Motors, which recently signed a strategic partnership.
