Volvo’s most powerful XC60 drives so impetuously
Overdosed: the new top engine for the Volvo XC60
Source: Volvo
306 PS, 400 Newton meters, in 6.9 seconds to 100 km / h. Sounds just good enough for an SUV of just under two tons. But the massive Volvo XC60 T6 cannot handle its power.
JNow he’s almost seven years old and still looks fresh. The Volvo XC60 started in 2008, and its exterior has remained so significantly Volvo that the only facelift from 2013 with redesigned headlights and slightly modified front apron was deliberately very discreet.
As soon as you get in, you notice that the massive mid-range SUV is getting a bit old. Scandinavian chic – in view of the instrument panel, that may have crossed your mind at the beginning of the model series.
But the status quo is currently changing as quickly as technical progress, especially in the cockpit, is sprinting from innovation to innovation. The many buttons in the XC60 are now perceived as too much, the material mix anyway – especially in comparison to the greatly reduced interface of the brand new XC90. In the age of touchscreens, who needs a complete number field??
Twice the charge – less thirst for fuel
But as I said – the layout is from 2008. One adjustment screw to give the compact SUV something technically up-to-date for the final spurt of its life was last operated by Volvo with an adjusted engine program.
That’s the spa effect of the XC90

The Swedish manufacturer responded to the trend towards smaller engines with the well-known abbreviation T6 for the top engines, which is no longer a six-cylinder, but a four-cylinder with 306 hp from a two-liter displacement.
The petrol engine is also available in the sedan S60 and the station wagon V60, which thanks to double charging should require up to 30 percent less fuel than the discarded, similarly horsepower six-engine. The five-cylinder has not existed for a long time in the smallest, 4.64-meter-long Volvo SUV.
Another calculation is that more customers will bite when you refresh the gasoline engine range. Because over 80 percent of the new cars from Sweden sold in Germany in 2014 have a diesel engine under the hood, only about every seventh is powered by a gasoline engine.
Cavalier start unavoidable
The combustion engine, which is doubly charged by turbo and compressor, delivers up to 400 Newton meters of maximum torque to the XC60, which on the sheet still sounds an average with an upward trend. But the lightness with which the T6 can be moved is as impressive as that of a diesel; sluggishness would be fatal in the heavy SUV segment.
With the power of a new turbo engine

The petrol range is supplemented by two further engines with 252 hp and 333 hp. The diesel range begins with the 150 hp two-liter engine. Above that there are four six…cylinder with 218 hp, 272 hp, 320 hp and 326 hp. In the sports models S6 and S6 Avant, the 450 hp eight-cylinder is used, which in the RS6 Avant even has 560 hp.

In addition to a new look, the interior has also been slightly redesigned.

Especially in city traffic, the temperament is also annoying. Because the Swedes meant it a little too well, especially when they started out. There is comfortably no trace of a turbo lag, the delayed thrust after stepping on the accelerator, but we pay for it with a very impetuous pace, to which one is almost forced.
Discreet starting at the traffic lights is hardly possible with this top-of-the-range engine, the more likely the wheels are spinning, and that’s probably because all the engine power goes exclusively to the front axle. As an all-wheel drive that would give the XC60 more rest and culture in this variant, the four-cylinder T6 is unlike its six-cylinder predecessor. Four-wheel drive is currently reserved for diesel models.
Bright spot in autumn
Why the whole thing? Because the twin-loader XC60 does not attract attention as a consistent athlete. On the contrary: you’re happy that the car can’t go faster than 210 km / h. Because even at lower speeds, Volvo‘s compact SUV gets sufficiently wobbly, at least with the comfortably designed touring chassis of the test car. Springs and dampers are simply set too soft, and the steering is more comfortable than crisp.

For this reason alone, the T6 variant is a little less fast, but again the top engine would not have been required.
Because the T5 with its four-cylinder 245 hp hardly feels weaker, it is almost on par in top speed. And both shift with the same smooth eight-speed automatic. The plus points of the T6 could be more convincing – especially since its standard consumption of 7.3 liters is 0.6 liters more than the next weaker gasoline engine (CO2 emissions: 169 or 157 g / km).
Customers have to ask themselves one question: Is the surcharge of a good 3300 euros worth it? The XC60 T6 is in the price list for at least 47,900 euros. But there is a ray of hope: From autumn, the most powerful four-cylinder will also be offered with all-wheel drive. Then the cards are reshuffled.
