So far there was the electric version of the Volvo XC40 exclusively with a 300 kW four-wheel drive. The result of the generous motorization was that the compact SUV was significantly more expensive than the Mercedes EQA, for example with front-wheel drive.

Now Volvo is pushing a version with front-wheel drive. which can now compete with the Mercedes in terms of price.

So far there has only been one version of the electric XC40 called the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric P8 AWD; this cost 62,000 euros. This version with a 150 kW motor at the front and rear is now called the XC40 Recharge Pure Electric Twin and will be available from 59,250 euros in the future.

The new XC40 Recharge Pure Electric has a 170 kW motor on the front axle. The torque (330 Nm) is the same as with the 150 kW units. Here the price list starts at 48,650 euros. The entry price, which is over 10,000 euros lower, is, however, also due to the less extensive standard equipment.

Because Volvo is now introducing three different equipment options. The entry-level 2WD version has the Core equipment, while the basic version of the AWD model has the Plus equipment:

Instead of a 78 kWh battery, only a 70 kWh battery is built into the front-wheel drive. Despite the lower power consumption, this means that the range remains roughly the same; it is around 400 km for both variants. Apparently, both versions are charged with a maximum of 150 kW direct current.

From the new entry price of 48,650 euros, you can still deduct the Volvo share of the environmental bonus of 3,000 euros and an additional manufacturer bonus of 570 euros. That brings you to 45,080 euros.

Volvo does not disclose how much the car is subsidized. According to the price list, the net price of the entry-level version is 40,882 euros, slightly above the magical limit of 40,000 euros. The BAFA list, which is decisive in this question, is currently as of September 14; the 2WD version of the XC40 is therefore not yet included.

As an alternative to purchase, Volvo offers a subscription. With a fixed term of three years, the monthly rate is 649 euros, with a flexible subscription, 719 euros are due per month.

Volvo has not yet announced whether the coupe version C40 Pure Electric will also be offered with front-wheel drive.
