Like all new electric Volvos, it will be based on either SPA2 or the Geely SEA platform

The production version of the recently introduced Concept Recharge should get a real name, said Volvo at the introduction. Volvo boss Håkan Samuelsson now added that this will apply to all upcoming Volvo electric cars, especially the successor to the XC90.

Automotive News Europe (ANE) reports on this now.

Volvo apparently wants to depart from the previously used letter-number combinations. Previously, hatchbacks (like the C40) had the letter C, sedans an S (like S60, S90), station wagons a V (V60 and V90) and SUVs an XC (XC40, XC60 and XC90), which is what Volvo beginners do made the overview easier.

That should change with the XC90 successor: "This car will have a name, more like a child," said Samuelsson. As the reasons for the change, he cited the innovations that come with the car. For example, Volvo is introducing a new platform with the vehicle, it will be sold exclusively online and will have lidar technology on board.

Where local regulations allow, unsupervised driving should also be offered, i.e. some kind of advanced form of autonomous driving. Another novelty is bidirectional charging being. Inside there will be a 15-inch touchscreen and a "floating" screen behind the steering wheel – like the Concept Recharge.

The production version of the large SUV is to be presented in 2022 and then delivered from 2023. It is to be built in the manufacturer's US plant in South Carolina.

Also the Polestar 3 is to be built in South Carolina from 2022, which suggests a common technical basis. According to Volvo, the Polestar 3 will be based on a new, dedicated electric platform.

According to Samuelsson, the new electric Volvos will be based on one of two platforms:

  • SPA2 (the second generation of the current SPA platform)
  • SEA (the platform of parent company Geely)

The current Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) enables combustion and plug-in hybrids. The current 60s and 90s models from Volvo are based on it. In particular, a small electric crossover will be based on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA), as Samuelsson said. That fits in with the statements made by Volvo chief engineer Kent Bovellan, who recently announced a small Volvo SUV below the XC40. According to the classification explained by Bovellan, the car should be based on the SEA1 version, which should cover segments B to D..

Whether the XC90 successor will be based on SPA2 or SEA1 (the Geely platform for segments D to F) is not clear from the new ANE article. For SEA1, the Geely Group would launch the Zeekr 001 next year wants to bring on the market, which is around five meters long and has XC90 dimensions. Either way, it remains a mystery to us why the Geely Group has two platforms at the same time.

In any case, according to Volvo, the XC90 successor should no longer be offered as a combustion engine or as a plug-in hybrid. The XC60 successor will also be offered exclusively as an electric car, as recently announced in a subordinate clause of a press release. An update for the current generations of XC60 and XC90 would be possible.

From 2030, Volvo only wants to offer electric cars. A new electric car is to be launched every year by 2025. The novelty for 2020 was the XC40 Pure Electric, the C40 was the debut for 2021, the XC90 successor should be the novelty for 2022. Which models will start in the years after is open to speculation. Volvo gave a clue in March with this graphic:

The cars already revealed are the XC40 and the C40. Which cars are the other five models remains open. The successors to the XC60 and XC90 as well as the small crossover model are probably among them.
