The RENAULT Group and the German-Australian company Vulcan Energy have now signed the final contract for the delivery of lithium for the production of electric car batteries. Accordingly, Vulcan Energy will be the Renault Group from 2026 over a period of six years with a total of 26.000 to 32.000 tonnes of lithium supply from the Oberrheingraben in Germany, so Vulcan Energy in a current message.
In a release published in the summer of Renault, 6000 to 17 years ago.000 tonnes lithium talking. Now it is only between a good 4300 and 5300 tons. For the reasons for the reduced quantities Vulcan Energy does not give any information, but speaks that Renault decreases only a good 12 percent of the expected flow rate. For further customers, the company has not yet been commented on.
The recovery of the valuable battery material is in an innovative procedure: Vulcan Energy wants to filter out and rework the lithium hydroxide contained therein in Oberrheingraben from Geothermal Sole. According to the company is the largest lithium deposit in Europe. The environmentally friendly funding procedure of the automotive group can reduce CO2 emissions in the production of a 50 kWh battery by 300 to 700 kilograms.
With the Delivery Agreement under the Zero Carbon Lithium project, RENAULT Group does an important step towards its goal of offering competitive and sustainable electric cars “Made in Europe”. Previously, the group has already decided to summarize three production sites in northern France to the most efficient manufacturer of electric vehicles in Europe under the name Renault Electricity.
Decisive for the partnership with Vulcan Energy is the CO2 emission-free, geothermal lithium recovery process of Vulcan Energy. Gianluca de Ficchy, Alliance Executive Vice President Purchasing and Managing Director of Alliance Purchasing Organization at Renault Group: “We are proud to cooperate with a European lithium producer such as Vulcan Energy, which does not cause greenhouse gas emissions. Our ecological and social responsibility is the focus of the Strategic Plan Renault, and this must also apply to the partners with which we work together if we want to create a real added value and want to offer the most sustainable vehicles in the market.”
The Renault Group has set itself the goal of operating carbon neutral worldwide and to reach the greenest mix on the European automotive market by 2025 with a share of over 65 percent electric vehicles and electrified vehicles at the total sales. Already in 2030 90 percent of the sold vehicles should be purely battery-electric travel. The RENAULT GROUP is therefore consistently ahead of your electrification strategy.

Forecasts are difficult, especially if they relate to the future. Renault, as a manufacturer rather cheaper vehicles, plays here at caution. If Catl actually hit with its Na-ion battery, lithium in the upper class and sports car range will certainly dominate, but no longer in demand in the price-sensitive segments.
Should technological progress but the lithium-based batteries continue to be strong and the Na-ion technology does not work as much as hoped, Renault is allowed to buy at worst at the end of the day.
