VW begins building third electric car plant in China-china

VW has started building a new MEB plant in China. This will make Volkswagen Anhui the Group’s third all-electric car plant in China. After the plants in Anting (SAIC VW) and Foshan (FAW VW). Anhui is said to be powered by regenerative energy from day one. According to VW, the construction work should be completed by mid-2022, and production could then begin in the second half of 2023.

The plant thus forms another cornerstone of the global e-offensive for the manufacturer. The goals are big: by 2025, the group wants to deliver up to 1.5 million electrified vehicles per year in China.

Stephan Wollenstein, CEO of Volkswagen Group China, said: "Volkswagen Anhui will be a global innovation center for e-mobility and a cornerstone of the Group’s decarbonization strategy. Since China is the world’s largest single market for electric vehicles, we need to strengthen our local competencies – and Volkswagen Anhui is an important part of this. With the plant, which is to be operated with green energy from day one, we are underpinning our commitment to reducing CO2 far beyond the vehicle fleet. "

The new building includes the conversion and upgrading of the former JAC plant (JAC = Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Co., a Chinese joint venture partner of VW) as well as the construction of a completely new body shop.

The body shop will be built on an area of around 141,000 square meters and will make up part of the total project area of around 500,000 square meters. As part of a comprehensive decarbonisation strategy, the site will implement a large number of energy efficiency measures, including particularly low-energy production facilities, according to the group. In addition, a local supplier park for batteries and other components is to be planned.

Volkswagen Anhui will have around 500 employees on board by 2025, the majority of whom will work in research and development. By concentrating R&D, quality assurance, production and security under one roof, the manufacturer wants to significantly shorten the time from product development to market launch.

Also interesting: According to VW, the product portfolio that is to be built in this plant will primarily be aimed at a younger target group. The planned e-models are therefore all based on the MEB platform.
