Mercedes, Volvo, GM and Ford want to sign a combustion waiver from 2040 at the climate conference in Glasgow
At the climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland (COP26), 24 states and six major car manufacturers want to commit to an end to the internal combustion engine in 2040. The British government has now announced this, according to a report by Reuters.
Mercedes, Volvo, BYD, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and General Motors want to sign the declaration. They want to end the production of fossil fuel vehicles worldwide by 2040. In the most important markets, they do not want to sell any more cars with combustion engines by 2035.
GM, Ford and Volvo confirmed their participation in the initiative. Volvo had already announced that the brand will be completely converted to electric vehicles by 2030. Jaguar wants a pure electric brand as early as 2025 Ford already had an end to the combustion engine in its car models from 2030 proclaimed.

At Mercedes, the statements have so far not been very clear – so it is surprising that the Stuttgart-based company is the only German brand to want to sign. one is preparing for an end to combustion in 2030, says CEO Ola Kallenius. But so far he had only ever spoken of one "goal": "Almost two years ago we presented our Ambition2039 with the goal of a CO2-neutral fleet of new cars by 2039. We have the ambition to achieve this goal we set ourselves earlier."
Volkswagen, Toyota and Stellantis, on the other hand, do not want to sign after the report. Honda, Nissan and Hyundai as well as BMW do not want to agree to waiver either. The VW Group already had a combustion engine shutdown for the core brand Volkswagen in 2035 announced, but only for Europe. At Stellantis, at least Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Opel should become pure electric brands before 2035.
Alfa should only offer electric cars as early as 2027
The 24 states that want to sign the declaration are missing the important car-producing countries China, the USA and Germany. In the USA, however, California wants to participate in the initiative. According to a report in the Suddeutsche Zeitung the incumbent German Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer (CSU) rejects the proposal: The fossil-fueled combustion engine will expire in 2035, but with synthetic fuels there should also be combustion-powered cars.
The EU Commission wants a combustion ban as early as 2035 reach. If it is successful, the second part of the Glasgow waiver should become a reality for Europe – after all, Europe is one of the most important markets.
