Update: Diess hands over responsibility for China to Brandstatter, Skoda boss Schafer becomes boss of the VW brand
The future of VW boss Herbert Diess has been for days in conversation – to put it more discreetly. One could also speak of a squabble over his post. But now it is clear: he will keep his job as CEO, but has to give up power.
Today, Thursday, the VW supervisory board decided on the personal details of the group’s board of directors. Thereafter, Diess remains CEO. According to information from the Spiegel and the FAZ, the works council would have liked to get rid of Diess – among other things because it had threatened to cut 30,000 jobs. The state of Lower Saxony, which is part of the VW group, was not happy either. The owner families Porsche and Piech, on the other hand, wanted to hold onto Diess. Supervisory board chairman Hans Dieter Potsch mediated between these poles.
So this remains, but has to give up responsibility. For example, Hildegard Wortmann, Head of Sales at Audi, will be the Group’s Chief Sales Officer in the future. Until now, Diess was responsible for sales himself.

VW brand boss Ralf Brandstatter is said to be VW China boss
Audi manager Hildegard Wortmann is to be responsible for the group’s sales in the future
Diess is also relinquishing responsibility for business in China. The Chinese market is very important for the VW group, but sales of the group brands represented there fell in recent months. In particular, sales of new electric models started weaker than hoped.
After VW China boss Jochem Heizmann left the company at the beginning of 2019, Diess took over responsibility for China. On August 1, responsibility is to go to Ralf Brandstatter, the previous head of the core Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. Brandstatter’s successor will be Thomas Schafer, the previous Skoda boss, from April 1. Who follows Schafer remains open for the time being.
In the software area, however, Diess is taking on a new role. From the beginning of 2022 he will be responsible for the CARIAD division. He will take over this role from Audi boss Markus Duesmann. Diess has high hopes for making money with new software offerings.
In addition, the previous chief legal officer Manfred Doss is to become the legal director and thus succeed Hiltrud Werner, who is leaving. A new position on the board for information technology will be created. It is occupied by the former Deutsche Borse manager Hauke Stars.
