After being used in Up and Polo, the Lower Saxony company is now bringing the shrink motor into the Golf for the first time and is now also offering a BlueMotion model as a gasoline engine. In the best case, they reduce consumption to 4.3 liters.

Prices start at 20,450 euros for the hatchback, 22,225You have to pay at least euros for the station wagon and 22,625 euros for the high-roof model Sportsvan; thus the three-cylinder models cost around 1000 euros more than the 1.2-liter four-cylinder with 110 hp.

“We’re pushing downsizing to the extreme,” says VW engine developer Carsten Helbing and raves about the new one-liter engine, which can do everything so much better than the previous 1.2-liter with four pots. Because the new turbo direct injection not only weighs ten kilos less and has less internal friction, it also develops even more power.

The power increases from 110 to 115 hp, and the maximum torque climbs from 175 to 200 Nm, while consumption drops by 0.6 liters. "With that we easily surpass the key data of the first Golf GTI," says Helbing.

The TSI is anything but a joke, especially not with the consumption-neutral change to the DSG gearbox: It takes 9.7 seconds from 0 to 100 km / h, the top speed is 204 km / h – even if you want to save, you have to don’t sneak. Especially not when 175 Nm are already available at 1500 tours and the turbo lag can therefore hardly be felt.

Soon also Tiguan and Touran with three-cylinder

Almost more than with its power delivery, the three-cylinder impresses with its smooth running. The hoarse growling that is characteristic of these engines can only be heard during kickdown and when the window is open. If you just swim with the traffic, the three-cylinder not only sounds more sonorous than the four-cylinder, but also quieter. Sometimes you almost feel like you’re in an electric car.

But of course it is not just the engine that makes its contribution to low fuel consumption. VW has also fitted tires with reduced rolling resistance, lowered the Golf by 15 millimeters, optimized the aerodynamics and built a blind in front of the radiator that closes automatically when the fresh air supply can be throttled.

However, nothing is new about it. "Why should I?" Asks VW engine developer Helbing, "after all, this package has proven itself to be very effective since the introduction of the first Golf BlueMotion eight years ago."

Although the engineer didn’t let the new engine come up, the great career seemed to be denied him for the time being. Since the three-cylinder is used in the Caddy as well as the Golf, he can only imagine it in the Touran and Tiguan. Unlike BMW, where there will soon be a three-cylinder for the 3 Series, Helbing does not see it in the Passat for the foreseeable future.

“That is less due to the three cylinders than to the displacement of just one liter,” says Helbing in defense of the TSI. "In the current mood, such a small engine for such a large car may still be a bit too much of a good thing."
