Volkswagen founds a European Aktiengesellschaft (Societe Europeenne) to bundle activities around the battery – from raw material processing to the development of the VW unit cell to the control of the European Giga Facts. This is from a communication of the company. New business models around the reuse of remotient batteries to recycling are also part of the task area. As it is further, the Group wants to become the world’s leading e-auto manufacturer as part of its “New Auto” strategy. Battery activities should therefore be expanded for core competence.
According to VW, cell production should be perspective more than 2500 people in perspective. Overall, around 2 billion euros in investment for construction and operation are planned until their production production. It should be used primarily employees from the engine plant. Further sites for the planned Giga factories are currently Spain and Eastern Europe. Exact locations should be determined in the first half of 2022.
Parallel to these activities, the Swedish start-up Northvolt is responsible, where Volkswagen is involved with around 20 percent, the establishment of another factory in the northwedsche SchellefteƄ. According to corporate information, there are to be produced there from 2023 battery cells for the automobile premium segment. Northvolt is a solid partner of the Group in this area.
Only last week Volkswagen had agreed two strategic partnerships with Umicore and 24m as well as a long-term delivery agreement with Vulcan Energy Resources. They aim at the production and procurement of materials and optimized cell production in the planned giga factories, it is said.
