… but rather keep it in check. The diesel engines each have a displacement of two liters and have between 75 and 150 hp. The petrol engine starts with an 84 hp 1.2-liter, above the eggn three-cylinder turbo with one liter displacement and 102 hp and the 1.4 liter TSI with 125 hp.

The high station wagon was once a classic delivery van. In its fourth generation, it now has cute decorative strips and a lot of infotainment. And there is now a double saving effect.

E.It’s got a bit quiet around these cars. A few years ago there was almost a hype about high-roof suits. But then the SUVs came and stole the show.

But in the slipstream, they continued to run a good race for the customers’ favor. At least the VW Caddy, the best-selling of its kind in Germany, has enjoyed constant success for years. In 2008, the first full year of sales of the Tiguan compact SUV, VW produced just under 160,000 units, a little more than in 2014.

So there can be no talk of a cannibalization effect, the segments in which SUVs and delivery vans drive are too different, no matter how limousine-like they may have become in recent years.

The fact that the Caddy has disappeared a bit is also due to the fact that the current one dates from 2003, the last facelift from 2010. Now the manufacturer is launching the long-awaited new generation. The Caddy IV will celebrate its world premiere in March at the Geneva Motor Show.

Preview in Poland

Now the commercial vehicle department has lifted the curtain for the first time: the all-rounder was already on public display at the Poznan plant. With similar dimensions as before, but a smoother, more angular design with a new front and sharpened rear, the box-shaped car has more character on the outside. Inside the cockpit is getting new decorative strips, new fans and a better infotainment system.

Form is important, also in this segment, even if it all started with the delivery van. VW no longer only wants to lure trade, handicrafts and trades, families should also continue to find favor. The arguments for both target groups: unchanged good space, high variability.

The many new assistance systems are unlikely to arouse any contradiction. The Caddy takes over the multi-collision brake and the automatic collision protection from Golf & Co. And for the first time in the segment, the Caddy offers a high-beam assistant and cruise control with distance control. Even a drowsiness assistant can be ordered.

The price is going down. VW is passing on some of the cost advantages through its modular strategy to its customers and is offering the Caddy with comparable equipment at a basic price of 18,243 euros for the car variant and at least 17,594 euros for the panel van, even a little cheaper than its predecessor.

28 percent less consumption

The engines also play a role in saving money: In Generation IV they consume up to 28 percent less than before. The most stingy diesel now requires less than four liters.

You can choose from a total of four diesel engines, three petrol engines and again a natural gas variant. The diesel engines each have a displacement of two liters and have between 75 and 150 hp. The petrol engine starts with an 84 hp 1.2-liter, above which a three-cylinder turbo with one liter and 102 hp and the 1.4-liter TSI with 125 hp rank.

The 2CV-based delivery van introduced in the spring of 1951 differed from the sedan from the B-pillar onwards in that it had a box-like, spacious cargo area. The loading of the “box-Ente ”took place via two double doors at the stern. The 2CV delivery van was often used in the public service – for example by the French road rescue service or as a postal vehicle in Belgium.

Not as simple as before, more economical and smarter – this is how the Caddy sets the bar quite high for the new Touran, which in the eyes of many customers is more likely than the Tiguan as an alternative to the high-roof station wagon. The new edition of the minivan will also celebrate its premiere in Geneva. And in autumn, as the crowning glory of the large-capacity offensive, VW will be showing the successor to the VW bus, which is also overdue. As a long-running favorite for over 50 years, no one will steal the show anytime soon.
