A.When driving a hybrid vehicle, it was like this: You enjoyed being part of the automotive future with the hybrid drive and having done the environment a favor thanks to the relatively low consumption. But one also suffered because energy efficiency was bought at the price of numerous disadvantages. Hybrids are expensive and extremely artificial in terms of driving experience.
The German manufacturers were able to leave the field to the challengers, who mainly came from the Far East. Toyota and Honda shared the modest booty in the niche market. With an economical diesel, Audi, BMW and Mercedes believed they had better technology in store. The attempt to promote the diesel engine not only in Europe but also in North America and Asia has so far failed. While hybrid vehicles now account for three percent of new registrations in the USA, the rate of the once successful diesel fell to 0.85 percent.
New 1.4 liter engine
So Volkswagen first presented the Jetta Hybrid in Santa Fe (US state New Mexico). The Jetta, which is the second VW hybrid after the large Touareg, is due to hit dealers in Germany in the first quarter of 2013.
The basis for the drive of the economical VW classic is a completely new 1.4-liter TSI engine. The turbocharged engine has an output of 150 hp and is coupled to an electric motor supplied by ZF Sachs, which generates a maximum of 27 hp. The system output is 170 hp at 5000 revolutions per minute. The maximum torque of 250 Nm can already be accessed at 1000 rpm. A seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission takes care of the power transmission to the front wheels.
The driving performance of the Jetta Hybrid is impressive: the sprint from zero to 100 km / h takes 8.6 seconds, the top is at 207 km / h. Without the artificial limiter, even 222 km / h would allegedly be possible. Three weeks ago, VW broke the world speed record for vehicles with a displacement of less than 1.5 liters with a Jetta hybrid test vehicle. With a speed of 301.18, the Jetta was the first hybrid vehicle in its class to undercut the 300 km / h mark.
Purely electric for up to two kilometers
The Jetta now presented has a standard consumption of 4.2 liters per 100 kilometers, which corresponds to just under 95 grams of CO 2 per kilometer. For comparison: the top dog Toyota Prius regulates itself at 180 km / h, treats itself to a leisurely 10.4 seconds for the standard sprint – and consumes only marginally less than the Jetta at 4.0 liters per 100 kilometers. What electric fans should find attractive: Short distances of up to around two kilometers can be covered purely electrically by both cars. The Jetta allows powerful acceleration and speeds of up to 70 km / h, while with the Prius the show ends at 50 km / h at the latest.
Pure e-mobility can therefore be savored convincingly with the Jetta. Even more impressive, however, is how discreetly the hybrid technology works with normal to brisk driving. The increase in output from the electric motor is clearly noticeable when accelerating sharply; on the other hand, the combustion engine decouples when the driver takes his foot off the accelerator, in the range of up to 135 km / h and “power meters” would hardly register the complex technology that is under the hood. Only when stopping you shouldn’t be too tender: the braking process is not as smooth as with a conventional brake due to the system.
Disadvantages are limited to the trunk
The chassis should also be more tightly tuned, especially since the hybrid has to lug around 160 kilograms of extra weight for the drive and batteries. At higher cornering speeds, the body leans considerably and the tires with low rolling resistance whine in a bit of anguish. Not only the driver’s hearing, but also steering precision would benefit significantly from tires that are less prone to deformation. Pure sportiness was obviously less of a focus than comfort and efficiency; however, this should correspond exactly to the requirements of the target group.
The chassis offers high reserves in the limit area, the ESP stability system acts quickly and precisely. And the criticism of the Jetta is put into perspective in comparison to other hybrid vehicles in which you feel like you are in the command center of a clumsy spaceship.
The practical disadvantages of the hybrid drive are limited to a trunk, the volume of which is reduced by 140 to 370 liters; if you need more space, you can also fold down the rear seat backrests individually in the hybrid. Otherwise, the Jetta impresses with a neatly finished, well-equipped interior that offers plenty of space at the front and rear – and hardly has to lag behind the larger Passat.
Don’t suffer anymore
The Jetta Hybrid is not only the Jetta with the lowest emissions by far – its consumption is at the same level as the 1.6 TDI Blue Motion Technology, and its CO 2 emissions are significantly lower; after the imminent elimination of the 200 hp top version, it is also the most powerful. With its lively drive, it distinguishes itself as a real alternative to conventionally powered sedans in its class.
In future, the ability to suffer will no longer have to be strained when the chrome-plated hybrid badge is emblazoned on the rear of the vehicle.
