VW group apparently only wants to have one electric platform in the end-wants

VW currently has only one "real" electric car platform: the modular electrical construction kit (MEB), on which compact-class cars are based. Next year, the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) is to be added for larger and higher-quality vehicles, probably initially for the Audi Q5 e-tron and the Porsche Macan. From 2024, however, all newcomers to electronics could then be back on one platform, the Scalable System Platform SSP.

At the VW Power Day it was said that this platform would be suitable for all brands and all segments, i.e. probably for all cars from entry-level vehicles to premium vehicles. Now, an article from Autocar sheds more light on the whole thing.

Autocar asked CEO Herbert Diess when announcing the annual results on the new platform. Diess replied that SSP will eventually replace the existing platforms and will do so for a long time: "We are talking about the time beyond 2035," said Diess.

This reminds us of a chart from the speeches at today’s VW press conference, which was actually about software, namely the VW.OS operating system. But the picture also sheds light on the platforms:

The projects Trinity, Apollon and Artemis appear on this chart. Let’s start below: Artemis is based on the PPE platform, said Audi boss Markus Duesmann at the event. The chart now suggests that Trinity is based on the MEB, but is a kind of further development, just like the project with the previously unknown title Apollon. In any case, all three projects lead to a single platform: SSP.

However, the J1 platform, on which the Porsche Taycan and the Audi e-tron GT are based, is missing in the graphic. It therefore remains unclear whether this will also be replaced by SSP.

Diess said that SSP-based cars will largely be sold with standardized hardware. Optionally, further options can then be activated online for a fee. The vision that VW will earn its money with software updates in the future, had recently explained VW brand boss Ralf Brandstatter.

Diess added, "How many platforms does a group need? We believe that the differentiation of platforms is no longer relevant due to the many different powertrain concepts, as all new platforms have a battery skateboard. This gives us great scalability as it is lightweight Can accept different battery sizes and so on. "
