VW Group: Cheap, small electric cars again from 2024?-small

VW e-Up, Skoda Citigo e iV and Seat Mii Electric: Some of the small electric cars from the VW Group are still being delivered, but you can no longer order them. The Volkswagen Group's electric range currently starts with the ID.3, which costs more than 35,000 euros.

This is of course not a permanent condition. Now there's a new rumor about new small electric cars about that Automobile week and Automotive News Europe to report.

As auto journalist Georg Kacher writes, citing company circles, a Skoda Elroq will be the first small electric car to be launched in mid-2024. VW is said to have two small electric cars, which are logically called ID.1 and ID.2. What is surprising, however, is that the ID.1, which will start in 2025, will be a crossover and the ID.2, which will come onto the market two years later in 2027, a small car.

Finally, Seat will bring a model called Acandra in early 2025. It should be a sporty hatchback model. A second body variant could follow. A Cupra or Audi model is apparently not being planned.

The vehicles are to be based on a shortened version of the modular electrical construction kit (MEB) and use the same batteries as the current MEB models, i.e. 52, 58 and 77 kWh net. Skoda has the lead in development, but the city-electric vehicles are to be built in Spain – either at Seat in Martorell or at VW in Pamplona.

Sooner or later, the new small electric cars will replace their combustion equivalents VW Polo, Skoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza, because the VW Group only wants to sell electric cars by 2035.

The new electric models should have base prices of around 19,000 euros. This would mean that the price would still be below the currently cheapest electric car, the Dacia Spring for around 20,500 euros, and also under the Smart EQ Fortwo (almost 22,000 euros). The identical duo Smart EQ Forfour / Renault Twingo and the Fiat 500 e are even more expensive (from around 23,600 euros).

Other small electric cars such as the Opel Corsa-e or Renault Zoe are only available from around 30,000 euros. How expensive the Renault 5 expected for late 2022 or early 2023 we have to wait and see. Tesla has also announced an affordable entry-level model; if Elon Musk really got the Model 2 under $ 25,000 (21,300 euros), this car could also be among the competitors of the MEB small cars.

As early as March 2020 there were rumors about small electric cars based on the MEB. At that time, however, it was said that they should start in 2023 and above all there was talk of a format like VW e-Up & Co and of smaller batteries.

A year before that, in March 2019, it was said that Seat should have an urban electric small car develop on a scaled-down MEB basis. CEO Diess said at the time: "The small electric platform is a big step towards affordable electromobility. Seat will implement the first electric vehicle that is specially designed for city traffic."

There is still some time until 2024. We're pretty sure that the latest rumor won't be the last on the subject. But we are at least as certain that there has to be a small and inexpensive electric car from the VW Group.
