VW ID.3 and ID.4: Already 800 units per day are built in Zwickau-Cupra Born second half year

The production of the new ID.3 and ID.4 electric cars at the VW plant in Zwickau is making great strides. This is now proven by two tweets from Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH. After that, more than 800 pieces are currently being built per day. In a press release, VW Sachsen says that it should be 1,400 units per day in the summer.

As a hook for the message, VW Sachsen uses congratulations to the Cupra brand on the third birthday of the Seat offshoot. And not without reason, because the upcoming Cupra Born will also be built in Zwickau from the second half of 2021.

This is interesting information, because so far there has been no official information on the market launch. So far it was only known that there will be a Cupra showroom in Munich from the second half of the year. So you can answer the question about the market launch at least a little better: in July at the earliest.

800 pieces per day would mean 5,600 per week if people also work on the weekend. That would correspond to almost 300,000 pieces per year. In reality, the number should of course be lower, but the extrapolation shows the potential of the plant.

Production of the ID.3 started in November 2020 in the presence of Chancellor Angela Merkel. As of 2021, "up to 330,000 e-vehicles per year will roll off the assembly line" in the Saxon plant, as VW announced at the time.

In addition to Zwickau, the ID.3 has also been built in Dresden since the end of January, initially in small numbers of 35 units a day. Dresden is apparently also intended to remain a small MEB production site. A lot of MEB cars, on the other hand, are being built in the two Chinese plants in Anting and Foshan, where 600,000 vehicles are to be built annually.

The Skoda plant in Mladá Boleslav will soon be joining Zwickau, Anting, Foshan and Dresden, where up to 350 Enyaq will roll off the production line every day. In the future, one million MEB vehicles can be built per year in this way. From 2022 the plants in Emden, Hanover and Chattanooga (USA) will also intervene.

"In the final expansion stage, there will be 6 electric models from 3 brands in Zwickau produced ", writes VW. After ID.3 and ID.4, the ID.5 will soon roll off the assembly line, which will be introduced in the second half of the year, as VW Sachsen recently tweeted :

The Cupra Born is the fourth model. Then two more electric cars will follow, presumably the Audi Q4 e-tron and the Audi Q4 e-tron Sportback. So the three brands are VW, Cupra and Audi. And what about the Skoda Enyaq? Well, it is produced in Mlada Boleslav.

The VW Group plans to build 19 million cars based on the MEB by 2030. Whether deals like the sale of the platform to Ford or to a manufacturer of electric yachts are already included in it remains unclear for the time being.
