The current maximum charging capacity is apparently to be increased

VW ID.3, ID.4, Skoda Enyaq etc: 170 kW charging power from the end of 2021?-power

VW ID.3, ID.4, Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 e-tron: The current electric models from the VW Group can charge a maximum of 125 kW, some with significantly less. But this upper limit should rise to 170 kW in the fall, rumor has it. The cap can apparently also be changed via over-the-air update. This is what Nextmove boss Stefan Moeller reports in his test video for the Skoda Enyaq.

The German-British auto journalist Greg Kable had already worked for Autocar in December 2020 reports that the ID.3 should get increased charging power from 2021. From the end of 2021, says Kable, you should be able to choose between 130 and 170 kW when buying. Currently, 50, 100 or 125 kW are possible with the ID.3, depending on the version. At 170 kW you should be able to recharge electricity for a range of 194 kilometers in ten minutes.

With the Skoda Enyaq there are also versions with 50, 100 and 125 kW charging power for fast charging with direct current. During his visit to Skoda on the occasion of his Enyaq test drive (see Voideo above), Stefan Moeller apparently asked about higher charging capacities.

For example, what if you find out after buying that you have ordered a charging power that is too low? According to Moeller, the limitation is limited by software. The cap can also be lifted later, For which, however, a visit to the workshop is currently necessary.

But even with 125 kW the end of the line has not yet been reached. According to Moeller, Skoda wants the first over-the-air update at the end of the year (OTA update), with which higher charging capacities are possible. Even those who bought one of the first Enyaq should be able to charge the car faster. Skoda did not want to provide any information about the possible charging power, but then it is likely that exactly 170 kW will be possible. Moeller speaks of a charging option, which suggests that the increase to 170 kW will not be free.

The same should apply to the other vehicles based on the modular electrical construction kit (MEB), according to Moeller – and he should be right there. That would mean that VW ID.3 and ID.4, the Audi Q4 e-tron and probably also the soon-to-be-launched Cupra Born can then charge faster – presumably with up to 170 kW for both the large 77 kWh battery.
