The electric wave from Volkswagen continues: At Auto Shanghai, the ID.6, the third model in the ID family, was presented. The family SUV can accommodate up to seven occupants and is only built in China and only in China sold.

Like ID.3 and ID.4, the ID.6 is based on the modular electrical construction kit (MEB). In terms of space, functionality, design and, in particular, user experience, it is specially tailored to Chinese needs, according to VW. The car is 4.88 meters long – 30 centimeters longer than the ID.4. The increase in length is also due to a larger wheelbase (2,875 instead of 2,771 mm).

The batteries with 58 and 77 kWh known from the ID.4 are available. This results in ranges of 436 to 588 kilometers in the Chinese NEDC cycle. The all-wheel drive version 4Motion offers 225 kW, which is enough for a standard sprint in 6.6 seconds, the top is 160 km / h.

There are four configurations in total:

  • 58 kWh and 132 kW (rear-wheel drive)
  • 58 kWh and 150 kW (rear-wheel drive)
  • 77 kWh and 150 kW (rear-wheel drive)
  • 77 kWh and 225 kW (all-wheel drive)

This means that the drives differ a little from those of the ID.4. The basic version with 132 kW is slightly more powerful than the ID.4, where it has 125 kW. We know the data of the all-wheel drive version from the Skoda Enyaq, where a corresponding version has been announced. The Audi Q4 e-tron, on the other hand, has only 220 kW in the all-wheel drive version.

The well-known 150 kW rear engine is combined with an 80 kW engine at the front. This would result in a total of 230 kW. But the system output is increased to 220 kW by the power output of the battery limited, as an Audi expert told us at the Q4 presentation. Why do VW specify 225 kW for the ID.6 and Skoda for the Enyaq? We don’t know, but the 5 kW are probably not worth discussing either. Incidentally, the recently teased ID.4 GTX should also have the same all-wheel drive to get.

According to the picture above, only permanent magnet synchronous machines (PSM) are used with the ID.6. Audi, on the other hand, only uses a PSM at the rear for all-wheel drive vehicles, but an asynchronous machine (ASM) at the front. Audi cites the overload capacity and the low drag losses when the machine is not working as the reason for using the ASM.

In China, the ID.6 is offered with six and seven seats. The equipment range includes 19 to 21 inch rims, a longitudinally adjustable second row of seats and a large panoramic glass roof. An openable panoramic sliding roof can also be selected as an option.

According to VW, the electric SUV manages without physical buttons and switches. In the pictures, however, you can see buttons under the monitor in the middle. In any case, the operating concept is mainly based on the 12-inch touchscreen and the "Hello ID.".

Known from the ID.4 are the ID. Light (a narrow band of light under the windshield that points to the left or right at a turning point, for example) and the optional head-up display with augmented reality function. According to VW, the software and hardware of the ID.6 are "designed in a completely new architecture, so the customer can get updates into the car after the purchase."

With the ID.6, VW shows what is meant by "regionalization of the MEB": There will be models that are only offered regionally. The ID.6 is being built by two joint ventures:

  • ID.6 Crozz: from FAW-Volkswagen in northern China (based in Changchun)
  • ID.6 X: from SAIC-Volkswagen (SVW) in southern China (Anting, near Shanghai)

Technically, the two versions are apparently identical, but the look is slightly different, especially on the aprons and the area between the headlights. The ID.6 Crozz appears in orange on the pictures, the ID.6 X in purple:

As part of the Accelerate brand strategy, VW plans to present a new MEB vehicle each year. CEO Herbert Diess wants to achieve large quantities and cover all segments. Because by 2030, the Wolfsburg-based company wants to cover at least 70 percent of sales in Europe with electric cars. What is new is that it should be at least 50 percent each in North America and China.

"By 2023, Volkswagen will bring a total of eight ID. Models, including the MEB, to all of China. With the economies of scale that we have achieved, we can offer the most modern technology at affordable prices – and thus expand our electric offensive even further." (VW brand boss Ralf Brandstatter)
