VW ID.8: CEO Diess confirms the electric version of the Atlas-confirms

Volkswagen currently operates viral marketing quite often: Instead of press releases, important innovations are announced on channels such as the LinkedIn presence of a manager or they are hidden in speech manuscripts, as is now the case with ID.8. According to a manuscript of the speech, this was confirmed by CEO Herbert Diess last Wednesday.

At the "New Auto" event on Wednesday, Diess hadn’t said anything about an ID.8, but the official speech manuscript contained a reference to the large electric SUV. It is apparently supposed to be an equivalent to the combustion engine model VW Atlas that the brand sells in the USA (our cover picture). Here is the corresponding passage from the speech manuscript:

The inconspicuous line "Atlas: ID.8" is the only reference to the new model. The footnote only contains the information that the vehicle is not yet on sale.

The VW Atlas is a 5.04 meter long seven-seater SUV that, like the Tiguan, is based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB). In China, Russia and Mexico the vehicle is called VW Teramont. The Atlas is also available in a coupe-like variant called the Atlas Cross, which is also available as the Teramont X. Both models are not available in Europe.

The Atlas is the largest model based on this platform to date. Observers are therefore speculating that the ID.8 will also be the largest car based on the modular electrical construction kit (MEB). This is obvious, because if VW wants to bring the ID.8 to the market soon, there would be no other platform available that would allow electric drive – an electric conversion of the Atlas is unlikely in view of VW’s previous product policy.

The assignment of the ID.6 to the VW Passat is also interesting in the short section from the speech manuscript. This is surprising, because the ID.Vizzion, which was presented in Geneva in 2018, was actually valid as a study of the electric Passat and the ID.Space Vizzion presented in Los Angeles in 2019 as an equivalent to the Passat Variant.

However, both vehicles have nothing to do with the ID.6 mean, which is a seven-seater SUV:
