In 2025, two years earlier than originally planned, VW wants a new model in the
Bring the small car segment with a starting price of around 20,000 euros. The brand is now showing the study of the compact crossover at the IAA Mobility under the name ID.Life.

The vision of a purely electric small car for the city is intended to combine sustainability and digitization with an exceptionally flexible usage concept. The ID.Life can also be used as a cinema, amusement arcade or simply to relax in the fresh air.

"We have geared the ID.Life to the needs of younger customer groups. We are convinced of this: In the future, the car will be an even stronger expression of an attitude towards life. For tomorrow's customers, it is not just about mobility, but more about what." can be experienced by car. The ID. Life is our answer. " (VW brand boss Ralf Brandstatter)

The design of the ID. Life should be particularly "clear, reserved and of high quality". Decorative elements, add-on parts and a complex mix of materials were omitted – this connects the car with the Circular from BMW, which is presented almost at the same time.

The horizontal division of the vehicle between the body, glass surfaces and roof also contributes to the clear appearance. An individually designed and removable roof made of "air chamber textile" (probably a part based on the principle of the air mattress) enables an open-air feeling and also reduces the weight of the vehicle.

An electric motor drives the front wheels; This is where it differs from the previous MEB vehicles, which have rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. But the ID.Life is also based on the MEB, albeit in a shortened form that was specially developed for small cars. In this respect, the ID.Life is a relative of the Cupra UrbanRebel.

Like the Cupra study, VW's vision is also extremely powerful: the electric motor should produce 172 kW, which brings the car to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds. The 62 kWh (gross) battery enables a range of around 400 kilometers in the WLTP cycle.

The ID.Life also proves the high flexibility of the MEB. From small cars to vans, all vehicle concepts can be implemented on this platform.

The sustainable character of the ID.Life is particularly reflected in the materials. Wood chips are used as a natural coloring agent and bio-based hardener for the clearcoat. The air chamber textile for the roof is made from recycled PET bottles. Inside, wood is used for the dashboard and the rear seating area. And "bio oil", natural rubber and rice hulls serve as the basic material for the tires.

The car is also equipped for the digital experiences of the young generation. It can be converted into a cinema or gaming lounge in just a few simple steps, as a game console and projector are on board. If necessary, a projection surface extends out of the dashboard. Additional devices can be connected via a 230 volt socket in the interior.

The seating concept is extremely flexible. In this way, not only the rear but also the front bench can be completely folded down. Numerous variants are possible, from cinema seating and a two-meter-long bed to a cargo variant with plenty of storage space.

Part of the operating concept is that cameras and a display replace both exterior and interior mirrors. Essential driving functions are controlled via a touch control panel on the hexagonal, open-top steering wheel. A smartphone can also be integrated. In this way, navigation can be carried out using a separate device. Music, films and games are "seamlessly" integrated and displayed on the projection surface in the vehicle.
